Exploring Life & Business with Nickolas Magee of Wesby-Magee Notary Services LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nickolas Magee.

Hi Nickolas, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Truth be told, my story starting this incredible, well needed business is simplistic and admirable.

My name is Nickolas Marcus Magee (43), proud graduate of Benton Harbor High School (Class of 2000). After high school, I attended Lake Michigan College (Benton Harbor, Michigan) graduated with Associates in General Studies (Prelaw Concentration). Afterwards studied Criminal Justice and Sociology at Western Michigan University and graduated in 2006 with Bachelor of Arts Degree,

My workforce background includes law enforcement/security, social services, education, hotel hospitality and now tax preparation/notarization. Tax preparation been with H&R Block for over two tax seasons working part time between the months of January and April The tax off season is difficult for any tax preparer, workload dramatically decrease if not layoff from duty. So after my second tax season with H&R Block, i started researching potential side gigs. I researched wide range of side gigs from virtual office assistance to field inspection. Notarization or Notary Public upon research was a popular choice for tax preparers as stable and profitable off season work.

I began researching various notarization service businesses throughout the State of Michigan. Mobile notarization is a widely use service on the east side of the state. Upon viewing mobile notarization businesses, I stumble upon the Michigan Notary Association. Michigan Notary Association core mission is collaboration, education, and innovation, with a steadfast focus on elevating the role of notaries in Michigan. Michigan Notary Association was a tremendous resource providing a well detailed roadmap on how to become a Michigan Notary Public. Michigan Notary Association have over 194 active members state wide. A vast majority of the members own/operate mobile notarization businesses throughout the state. The mobile notary directory on the Michigan Notary Association website inspirated me to pursue the world of professional notarization and start a mobile notarization business right here in Berrien County based out of Benton Harbor, Michigan.

Wesby-Magee Notary Services officially started operations in March 2024, completed my first professional notarization in Bridgman, Michigan (West Wood of Bridgman Nursing Center) Healthcare Power of Attorney. I’ll admit I was nervous but thanks to the outstanding training from the Michigan Notary Association Basic Notary Education course; completing the notarization went extremely smooth for all parties directly involved.

Wesby-Magee Notary Services since have completed over 100 notarizations throughout Berrien County, participated in several Expungement Fairs (organized by Present Pillars Foundation ), conducted Notary Pop-Ups at various coffee shops, donuts shops, breweries, public libraries and farmer markets throughout the local area. Wesby-Magee Notary Services not only provide mobile notarization services but recently added Service of Process and Field Inspections to list of services we provide throughout Berrien County. This past September 2025 Wesby-Notary Notary Services took an extradentary step expanding our business into Northern Indiana. Northern Indiana Services will officially launch in the Spring of 2026 roughly after our two year anniversary (March 2026).

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was difficult getting the business off the ground because mobile notarization is not very common on the west side of the state especially in Berrien County. Despite several other mobile notarization businesses existing previously. Berrien County residents as a whole are use to traditional notarization services mainly going to a bank, public library, government building or local UPS Store seeking/wanting notarization. When resident see’s mobile notarization there is a hint of hesitation/unfamiliarity. Which is understandable to a certain degree, would you trust a complete strange entering your residence or business claiming to be a mobile notary public, asking to see your identification and witness you writing your signature on important/essential documents that are deem private/sensitive.

Fortunately, all mobile notary public’s must follow to the Michigan Notary Law as it pertains to conducting notarization, charging the appropriate fees and follow the law exactly like traditional stationary notary public.

So, Wesby-Magee Notary Services through our various social media platforms provided information ensuring the public that mobile notarization was safe, secure and convenient

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I absolutely love Berrien County as a whole. This is not a gaslighting response, I truly love Berrien County especially my home town of Benton Harbor, Michigan (Southwest Michigan). I been living in this community my entire life, product of public education (Benton Harbor Area Schools, Lake Michigan College and Western Michigan University). I meet and married my wife (Jacoy D. Wesby-Magee) right ere in Benton Harbor, Michigan. We been married for 16 plus years with four incredible children (Nigel, Nixon, Niles and Jacqueline), a black cat (Winston Churchill) and Jack Russell Terrier mix with Pitbull (Eisenhower).
