Exploring Life & Business with My Green Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to My Green Michigan.

Hello My Green Michigan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My Green Michigan was established in 2014 with the mission of working with green-minded people and businesses. We work with companies to reach their environmental goals by expanding their recycling efforts and capturing their food scraps for composting. We started out with a pick-up truck servicing a small region and now have two full-scale refuse collection trucks that service all of Southern Lower Michigan. We work with a variety of customer types ranging from restaurants, schools, and hospitals to food production and distribution facilities, municipal drop-off programs, and more.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have definitely been challenges along the way, most namely Covid-19. When all the restaurants and offices shut down and reopened at a very limited capacity or not all, this had a significant impact on our business and collection rates in 2020 with slow recovery in 2021. Despite the impacts of all this, this past year we were back on track with our best year to date, diverting 915 tons of food scraps from the landfill.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My Green Michigan is a food scraps and organic waste hauler. All of the organic material we collect is composted at Spurt Industries (Wixom) and Hammond Farms (Dimondale), both of which are state-registered compost facilities who produce and sell compost and soil products to landscapers, farmers, homeowners, and more. The organics industry is continually expanding with no signs of slowing down, and our company is in a unique position that makes us a great choice to work with. With our large service area and the size of collection trucks, we are able to offer our services across the state to a variety of industry types and sizes. Because of how we operate, it is easy to customize our services to best fit each customer’s needs, expand their recycling initiatives, and achieve their sustainability goals.

Composting is an excellent example of recycling by taking plant nutrients, turning them into a soil amendment through natural decomposition, using that soil to grow more plants and food, and repeating the process. Organic matter can be infinitely recycled and is one of the most effective ways to dispose of organics like food and yard waste. Recycling organic material has a tremendous number of benefits, and we are proud to offer services that make a positive impact on recycling and sustainability efforts here in Michigan.

Service options include:

– Food scraps pick up using 32- and 64-gallon curbside carts.

– Subscription service on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.

– One-time event service for conferences, fundraisers, weddings, and more.

– Roll off dumpsters for large-volume producers.

– Sale of compostable products like liners and tableware.

What do you think about luck?
We are fortunate to have long-standing customers who believed in our business from early on and are highly committed to their sustainability efforts. Some of these customers helped push us to where we are today and are the reason we have been able to expand our services and work with companies all over the state with a variety of different needs and maximize their recycling efforts.
