Exploring Life & Business with Milton Putman of Complete Dominance Athletics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Milton Putman.

Milton , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Complete Dominance Athletics began as a personal mission rooted in my own life experiences, faith, and passion for helping people become stronger mentally, physically, and spiritually. I started by training individuals and small groups in my community, focusing not only on physical conditioning but also on discipline, confidence, mindset, and emotional resilience. Very quickly, I saw that what people needed most wasn’t just a workout, they needed guidance, mentorship, and a safe place to grow.

As demand grew, I expanded my services to youth and teen conditioning programs, father child fitness sessions, personal training, and senior wellness classes. I built relationships with recreation centers, schools, and community organizations across Detroit, which allowed me to take my programs into environments where they could create the greatest impact. These partnerships helped me refine a model that blends fitness, mentorship, and mental wellness into one holistic experience.

Over time, Complete Dominance Athletics evolved from a personal training effort into a community-based wellness organization. Today, we serve youth, families, seniors, and corporate clients through innovative programs that focus on overall well-being, not just physical performance. We now offer fatherhood-based fitness (FitFam Fusion), youth athletic development, mindset coaching, CPR certification, corporate wellness, and community workshops designed to build healthier families and stronger communities.

My journey has been guided by service, purpose, and the belief that true dominance begins within. The vision now is to continue scaling these programs throughout Detroit and beyond by helping people unlock their potential and build a lifestyle of strength, confidence, and complete wellness.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has definitely not been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped the strength and purpose of Complete Dominance Athletics. One of the biggest struggles was balancing the demands of building a business while managing my own mental, emotional, and physical health. As the business grew, I found myself wearing every hat — trainer, mentor, administrator, marketer, and community partner which often led to exhaustion and overwhelm.

Another challenge was gaining consistent access to schools, recreation centers, and community organizations early on. Even though the programs were impactful, breaking through administrative barriers and earning trust took persistence, patience, and a track record of results.

Financial challenges were also real. Growing a mission-driven organization while funding equipment, space, marketing, and program development required sacrifice and long-term vision. There were seasons when I had to rely more on faith than resources, trusting that consistency and service would open the right doors.

And like many small businesses, navigating technology, scheduling, outreach systems, and client management without a full team made scaling the programs difficult at times.

But each struggle strengthened the foundation. These obstacles pushed me to sharpen my leadership, build better systems, deepen my partnerships, and stay rooted in the mission of helping people grow mentally, physically, and spiritually. Today, those early challenges are the reason Complete Dominance Athletics is able to deliver meaningful, life-changing programs with authenticity and purpose.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Absolutely. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned on this journey is that mentorship and networking are not just “nice-to-have” they’re essential. Complete Dominance Athletics has grown because I made it a priority to surround myself with people who were more experienced, more connected, and more knowledgeable than me in the areas I wanted to excel in.

My advice is simple: be intentional, be consistent, and be humble enough to learn.

I didn’t wait for mentors to come to me. I sought them out, in business, politics, community leadership, athletics, and manufacturing. I attended events, reached out through email and social platforms, and asked genuine questions. I also made sure I wasn’t just taking, I always looked for ways to bring value back.

One thing that has worked extremely well for me is building relationships through service. When people see your work ethic, your character, your commitment to excellence, they want to help you. They want to open doors for you. That’s how I met my mentor, Denise Everett, through consistent action and being in the right rooms with the right mindset.

Another strategy that has helped me is aligning myself with organizations, schools, recreation centers, and industry leaders who share similar missions. Networking becomes easier when your purpose matches their purpose. Doors open faster when people trust your vision.

Ultimately, mentorship and networking are about connection, consistency, and character. If you show up with those three things, the right people will show up in your life, and they will help you elevate to levels you couldn’t reach alone.
