Exploring Life & Business with Maggie Chambers of Huron Creative

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Chambers.

Hi Maggie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been designing and creating for as long as I can remember. I’m a Northern Michigan native, originally from Mackinac Island, a place that has remained a deep source of inspiration throughout my life.

After college, I left Michigan and moved to Washington, D.C., where I spent nearly a decade working at ad agencies and tech startups. During that time, I helped create brands, products, digital experiences, and everything in between. The work was fast-paced and incredibly formative, but over time, I felt less connected to the type of projects I was contributing to and knew it was time for a change.

In September 2023, I took a leap of faith, left my corporate job, and began pursuing freelance design full-time, which is something I had dreamed about for years. That decision is what led to the creation of my design studio, Huron Creative. It also eventually enabled me to leave D.C., spend some time in Europe, North Carolina, and Colorado, and eventually settle down in beautiful Traverse City, MI.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been easy, but I’ve tried to embrace every challenge along the way.

When you first start on your own, it is nerve-wracking not to have a steady paycheck and not always know where your next project will come from. There’s a real element of learning to trust the unknown. I’ve also had to find a balance between being proactive and making things happen, while also leaving space for the right opportunities to unfold naturally. That balance is something I’m still learning.

Running a business also means wearing many hats. On any given day, I might be a designer, project manager, art director, and amateur accountant. Luckily, I enjoy the variety and get a lot of satisfaction from figuring things out and growing through the process.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Huron Creative is a boutique design studio based in Northern Michigan. I specialize in branding, web design, and illustration for small to medium-sized businesses, entrepreneurs, and creative individuals who are trying to make a positive impact in their communities.

When you work with Huron Creative, we’re going to be partners. I enjoy and feel it is important to take the time to truly understand you, your vision, and your business. Every brand is built from the ground up to feel authentic, thoughtful, and aligned.

Unlike larger agencies, where projects often pass through multiple hands, working with Huron Creative is a more personal and collaborative experience. Clients often describe it as feeling like a mini creative retreat: inspiring, supportive, and refreshingly easy. You’re also gaining a fellow business owner’s perspective, which helps shape a brand and website that support long-term growth, not just a quick visual update.

Any big plans?
This year, my goal is to continue partnering with purpose-driven businesses and brands that are doing meaningful work but may feel stuck, overlooked, or unsure how to visually communicate their value. I love helping bring clarity, confidence, and cohesion to what they’re building.

I recently launched a new website, www.huroncreative.com, which showcases recent work and shares more about my services and process. I’m excited to keep growing, connecting with more local and mission-driven clients, and creating work that feels both beautiful and meaningful.

And truly, thank you for taking the time to read and learn more. I can’t wait to see what we create next.
