Exploring Life & Business with Joseph Renshaw of BHS Tactics & Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Renshaw.

Hi Joseph, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Michigan. I’m currently a full-time law enforcement officer serving in southern Michigan.

After high school, I began a career in Automotive Refinish and Repair. While the work was steady over time I found myself feeling unfulfilled. My wife pushed me to chase my calling. I felt a strong pull toward something more meaningful, work that allowed me to serve others and make a difference in my community.

Early on I was told, “If you’re going to be of service, be of service to your own people.” That mindset stayed with me and played a major role in my decision to join the local Sheriff’s Office. Serving the community I grew up in, alongside people who share its values.

I entered the profession during a particularly difficult period, when public trust in policing was at an all time low and the challenges facing the profession were very real. From the beginning, I felt that if I wasn’t willing to step forward and be part of the solution, I had no right to complain from the sidelines.

Long before my law enforcement career, I was fortunate to be influenced by my uncle, who has been teaching CPL and firearms training for as long as I can remember. He instilled in me the fundamentals of safe, responsible, and disciplined training. Those early lessons taught me that good instruction isn’t about ego or titles, but about consistency, humility, and doing the basics well every time.

Over time, my experiences in law enforcement reinforced those lessons and revealed a consistent gap between how people think safety and preparedness work and what actually holds up under stress. I saw well intentioned individuals, churches, and organizations relying on surface level plans, borrowed policies, or equipment without real training or understanding.

As a husband and father, preparedness stopped being theoretical. It became about responsibility, foresight, and protecting the people who rely on you.

That realization planted the seed for BHS Tactics and Consulting. BHS became the place where my upbringing, professional experience, and commitment to practical service came together in one mission. The goal has always been to make safety approachable, realistic, and rooted in real world experience rather than fear or theory.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges in building BHS Tactics and Consulting has been navigating an industry where certifications are often mistaken for real-world competence. While credentials have their place, I’ve seen firsthand how easily training can become disconnected from reality when it’s not grounded in experience, accountability, and measurable standards.

I’ve encountered instructors offering courses who could not meet the minimum performance standards I believe a student should strive for, let alone demonstrate as an instructor. This creates a false sense of confidence, which can be more dangerous than having no training at all. Setting a higher bar without sounding confrontational has been a constant challenge, especially in a space where marketing often matters more than substance.

Another obstacle has been educating people on the value of preparedness, without relying on fear. Many safety and training businesses lean heavily on worst case scenarios and emotional triggers to drive attention. BHS has taken a different approach, focusing on clarity, responsibility, and practical readiness instead of panic. While that approach builds long-term trust, it can be harder to promote in a world where clickbait and fear-based advertising dominate attention.

There has also been the challenge of growing a business intentionally rather than quickly. It’s tempting to offer generic solutions or oversimplified promises, but doing so would compromise the integrity of the work. BHS has grown deliberately, prioritizing quality, honesty and meaningful relationships over rapid expansion.

Despite those challenges, they reinforce why BHS exists.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At its core, BHS Tactics and Consulting focuses on practical preparedness. The work centers on helping people understand risk, make better decisions under pressure, and develop realistic skills they can rely on in real life.

Much of the work involves on site risk assessments and custom training for churches, libraries, businesses, and families. Rather than offering generic programs, each assessment and training session is tailored to the specific environment, people, and challenges involved. The emphasis is always on fundamentals, clear roles, and repeatable actions that hold up under stress.

Education extends beyond in person training. BHS also creates written and digital resources designed to reinforce learning, encourage personal responsibility, and give people tools they can continue using long after a course ends. The goal is not just to teach skills, but to help people think differently about preparedness in everyday life.

Merchandise is another extension of that mission. Some of it is simply BHS-themed apparel designed to build community, start conversations, and keep the brand approachable. At the same time, BHS also offers carefully selected equipment and gear.

BHS sells medical products from North American Rescue. Their equipment meets the same standards trusted by military, law enforcement, and emergency medical professionals. Items like tourniquets and trauma supplies are only valuable if they work when needed, and reliability matters more than marketing.

Savior Equipment products are offered because they provide durable, well-designed storage solutions for firearms and gear at a price that is accessible for everyone. Safe transport and responsible storage are often overlooked parts of training, yet they are essential to everyday safety and accountability.

Olight products are included because quality lighting is one of the most underestimated tools in personal safety. Whether it’s identifying a threat, navigating in low light conditions, or responding to an emergency, dependable illumination plays a critical role that most people don’t consider until they need it.

Everything offered through BHS, training, education, or equipment, is chosen intentionally. The focus is on tools and knowledge that support calm decision making, personal responsibility, and realistic preparedness rather than trends or fear driven sales.

Any big plans?
Looking ahead, the focus for BHS Tactics and Consulting is sustainable growth that strengthens the quality of training and the relationships behind it. One of the next major steps is building a dedicated classroom and firearms training range. Having a personal training space will allow BHS to expand offerings, control training standards, and create a consistent learning environment where instruction can continue beyond a single course or event.

With a brick and mortar location, the long-term goal is to pursue a Federal Firearms License. This would allow BHS to provide start to finish solutions for the individuals and organizations it works with, from education and training to responsible equipment selection. The intention is not to compete with large retailers, but to offer guidance and support in a setting where people know who they’re working with and why recommendations are being made.

Many people prefer working with someone they trust rather than a big-box store or anonymous online seller, especially when it comes to safety and personal responsibility. BHS aims to be that trusted resource.

As BHS continues to grow, the mission remains the same: to provide practical, honest preparedness rooted in real world experience, and to build something lasting that serves the community well beyond individual training sessions.
