Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Jansen.
Hi Jessica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started making candles in my spare bedroom in my apartment in Maryland in 2006. I was working as an Esthetician at the Hyatt in the spa. I wanted to make some gifts for my co-workers, and that is how it all started. Fast forward, I moved to Michigan in 2008, I was working at MGM in the spa when I got laid off in 2020 due to COVID-19.. I followed my passion and started a full-time business making candles and self-care products. Soon after, I started doing pop-up shops around the city and at the gym, and my customers began asking for crystals. This is when I decided to start teaching myself how to wire wrap crystals and make my jewelry. the rest is history.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was not all smooth. there were some ups and downs. Coming from a corporate spa world, I had a lot to learn about being an entrepreneur. I did not know where to start. I had no idea where to go or who to ask, so YouTube and Facebook groups were my best friends. I spent hours watching videos, trying to learn about doing events, setting up tents, and creating displays. Not knowing where to go, I ended up at many low-end events and was disappointed not making any money. I guess you have to pay your dues somehow. I could make a reality show about some of the experiences I have had along the way. I would not change anything, It just made my journey more interesting. It was all worth it, every experience was a learning experience. The best part of this journey is meeting some of the coolest people I have met along the way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are currently looking for a physical location. In the meantime, we are participating in pop-up shops, farmers’ markets, and festivals. We also offer online shopping.I craft exquisite wire-wrapped crystal jewelry, indulgent self-care products, and soothing hand-poured coconut soy candles. While we search for the perfect brick-and-mortar location, you can find us at vibrant pop-up shops, charming farmers’ markets, and lively festivals. Don’t forget, our delightful creations are also available for online shopping, bringing a touch of magic right to your doorstep.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I wish I had known about Techtown Detroit when I first started on my journey, I also wish I had started while I was still working at the spa; I feel like I would have been so much further along. In a way, I feel like everything happened like it was supposed to because when I was working full time at MGM, they tried to hog up all my energy and time. It was a very draining experience. Being laid off during COVID-19 was the best thing that happened to me. I felt like I was set free! I feel it would have been nice to have a mentor I could have consulted with when I started. My advice to someone just starting is you have to believe in yourself, and you have to have a passion for what you want to do. Keep an open mind and listen to successful people. Do your research, read, and watch videos. and try to learn as much as you can about your craft. Don’t let the nay-sayers bring you down, and don’t dwell on negative experiences. Focus on the positive.
