Hi India Bell & Layla Kuhl, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
In 2015, Layla found herself struggling to balance domestic life with a development project. She decided to find a house cleaner. She wanted to hire someone directly to ensure she was well paid. Through a local nonprofit, Layla found a mother of three, and she was her first residential cleaning client. Over the years, her client list grew to include many of Layla’s family, neighbors, and friends.
After completing her development work, Layla officially founded Clean Work in 2020 with a mission to improve people’s quality of life through cleaning their homes and through elevating service industry jobs.
In 2021, India Bell was introduced to Clean Work by her best friend, Takeia. After spending the pandemic as a stay-at-home mom raising her young children, she was ready to return to work but wanted to prioritize her family. Clean Work offered exactly that. From the beginning, India found a team that valued flexibility, collaboration, and personal growth.
As India’s strengths in customer service, organization, communication, and leadership became evident, Layla entrusted her with increasing responsibilities that eventually led to a management role. Along the way, Layla mentored India in leadership, business operations, and client relations while encouraging her to bring fresh ideas to the company. India’s creativity, dedication, and commitment to continuous learning have helped strengthen the business and prepare it for its next chapter.
Today, in 2026, Clean Work is transitioning to being owned and operated by India Bell. India brings a background in customer service and holds an Associate of Science degree in Human Services from Cornerstone University. As a wife and mother, she understands firsthand the value of having a clean, peaceful home and is passionate about helping families reclaim their time.
What began as one woman looking for a fairly paid cleaner has grown into a company built on trust, relationships, and shared values. Together, Layla and India have worked to build a business that is not only dedicated to their client’s satisfaction but also creates opportunities for people to grow personally and professionally.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
COVID presented a significant challenge in the beginning; people were very nervous to have a cleaner in their house and cleaners also wanted to make sure they were equally protected. Masks, hand-sanitizer, and general COVID practices were very helpful and allowed the business to grow slowly in those early years.
Finding a pay structure that was transparent and paid people according to their work and effort was another early challenge. Moving away from standard hourly rates and large teams, Clean Work pioneered an innovative model where cleaners receive a percentage of each service and manage individual client relationships. This approach fosters mutual respect, rewards high-quality work, and empowers team members by ensuring their efforts are directly valued.
Balancing family life, work responsibilities, and the unexpected obstacles that come with running a business hasn’t always been easy. What has made the difference is having a supportive team. We step in for one another when needed, communicate openly, and work together to overcome challenges. Those experiences have made us stronger as individuals and as a company.
