Exploring Life & Business with Erika Dettloff of Erika Christine Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Dettloff.

Hi Erika, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have loved taking photos from a young age. Growing up I had my fair share of point and shoot digital cameras, polaroid cameras etc. My dad was also into photography as a hobby and he would let me use his “good camera”, as I called it, to shoot around with. After high school I began photographing weddings as a second shooter with a past teacher of mine who became a mentor to me. During that time, friends and family began asking me to take photos of their families, senior photos, events, etc. and that was when I officially started my business. I never thought I had the desire to shoot weddings on my own and thought I would just be a portrait photographer, but after a few years I became really excited and inspired by wedding photography and I was ready to start shooting my own. I truly did not believe that I could make a career out of photography and thought it would always be a side hustle until one day it was just too much to handle on top of a regular 9-5 job and I was able to officially run my photography business full time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were definitely some struggles along the way; especially in the beginning when trying to build trust and clientele as a new business. There were certainly some times where I thought that it would be too hard to run a business and I wasn’t sure if it would work out, but it ended up working out better than I could’ve ever imagined. I am very grateful for the client and professional relationships I have made along the way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Erika Christine Photography?
