Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Alex Schechter.
Hi Dr. Alex, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After veterinary school and years of clinical practice, I saw an opportunity to create a different kind of veterinary experience – one that combined high-quality medicine with exceptional communication, transparency and client service.
Too often, pet owners felt rushed, overwhelmed or confused during veterinary visits. I wanted to build a practice where relationships and trust were just as important as diagnostics and treatment plans.
That vision led to the creation of Burrwood Veterinary.
From the beginning, our goal has been simple: provide outstanding medical care while making pet owners feel heard, informed and supported.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has definitely not been smooth. From finding the right location and managing the build-out process to developing efficient operations and building a strong team, there have been challenges at every stage. I live by the motto, “Fail forward and pivot quickly.”
We’ve been impressed with Burrwood Veterinary, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Burrwood Veterinary is a full-service general practice and urgent care hospital dedicated to providing modern care. We also have a mobile cardiologist, internal medicine specialist, boarded surgeon and ultrasonagrapher; which are unique services most hospitals in the area wouldn’t be able to provide.
We’re also committed to embracing technology and innovation to improve the client experience while maintaining the personal touch that makes us so special.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I expect veterinary medicine to continue being consolidated by large corporate groups, with more than 60% of practices already corporately owned. While this can create efficiencies, it often reduces the focus on personalized, community-based care. That trend was one of the main reasons I opened Burrwood Veterinary – to provide locally owned, relationship-driven care for pets and their families. I believe independent practices that stay connected to their communities will continue to be highly valued.
