Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Emch.
Hi Donna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been a registered nurse for more than 32 years, including 26 years within a hospital/health system setting. Over the past 21 years I have had the privilege of serving in a variety of leadership roles that have shaped my career and my approach to healthcare delivery. Throughout those years, opportunities to work closely with the community inspired me to explore care delivery beyond the traditional health system model. That journey ultimately led me to PACE Southeast Michigan six years ago and it remains one of the best professional decisions I have ever made. The PACE model aligns with my passion for supporting older adults through a holistic, interdisciplinary model that enables them to maintain their independence while receiving the support they need to thrive. Beyond my passion for serving older adults through a comprehensive model of care, I have found tremendous fulfillment in the opportunity to lead within PACE. Developing leaders, inspiring teams, and helping others recognize and achieve their potential are among the most rewarding aspects of my career. I am energized by creating an environment where people feel supported, challenged and empowered to deliver exceptional care knowing that our collective efforts make a meaningful difference in the lives of the participants we serve every day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While I am grateful for the experiences and opportunities that have shaped my career, the journey has not been without its challenges. Some of my greatest lessons came not from my successes, but from navigating uncertainty, difficult decisions and moments that tested my resilience. There were times when I questioned myself, faced setbacks or encountered situations that pushed me outside of my comfort zone. Looking back, those moments often became the most valuable learning experiences of my career. Balancing people, performance, change, and mission require a different set of skills – ones I continue to develop and refine every day. One of the most important lessons I have learned throughout my career is that effective communication and strong relationships are at the heart of success. Whether working with participants, families, colleagues or staff, taking the time to understand where people are, listening to their perspectives and meeting them where they are creates trust and meaningful connections. I have found that people are more likely to engage, grow, and achieve positive outcomes when they feel heard, valued, and understood. This principle has guided my approach to leadership and I recognize that mastering it is an ongoing journey.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about PACE Southeast Michigan?
PACE (Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly) is a nationally recognized, integrated healthcare model designed to help older adults with complex medical needs remain safely and independently in their homes and community. PACE Southeast Michigan is proud to be the largest PACE program in the State of Michigan and the 5th largest in the nation. It is unlike other plans because we do the care ourselves. Unlike traditional health plans, we directly provide and coordinate care and services through our interdisciplinary teams, ensuring a seamless, personalized experience for every participant. Across our 10 health centers participants have access to a comprehensive range of services including primary care, medical specialists, dental, podiatry, nursing services, home care, palliative care, rehabilitation (physical, occupational and speech therapies), mental/behavioral health, social work, recreational/life enrichment programs, spiritual care, nutritional support and more. In addition, our dedicated transportation fleet provides safe and reliable access to medical appointments and center-based activities. More than just transportation providers, our drivers build meaningful relationships with participants and become trusted members of their care team.
At the heart of our model is a person-centered, holistic approach. Our interdisciplinary teams partner closely with the participant and their families to develop individualized comprehensive care plans that address not only medical needs but also social, emotional, spiritual and functional well-being. In addition, we recognize the essential role that families play in caring for their loved ones. We are committed to providing the resources, support and tools needed to help them thrive while reducing stress and prevent burnout.
We are most proud of our ability to deliver compassionate, high-quality care that enhances quality of life, promotes independence, and allows older adults to age with dignity in the setting they call home. Our mission–driven team is dedicated to serving some of the most vulnerable members of our community, making a difference in their lives every day. From our frontline staff to executive leadership, there is a shared passion for serving older adults with dignity, compassion, and respect. This unwavering commitment is deeply embedded at every level of the organization and serves as the foundation for everything we do.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I have always been energized by people and the outdoors. Growing up, you rarely found me sitting inside-I spent my time playing sports, snowmobiling, riding dirt bikes, and embracing any opportunity for adventure. It is also where I developed a love for travel. Looking back, I realize that alongside my love for activity, I was equally drawn to caring for others. I enjoyed visiting senior living communities, spending time with my grandparents and babysitting whenever I could. I was a good listener and found inspiration in listening to people’s stories and experiences.
My strong work ethic developed early. I began babysitting at age 12 and by 15 was working in the restaurant industry. Those experiences taught me responsibility, communication, and the value of building relationships with people from all walks of life.
It took time for me to discover what truly inspired and fulfilled me. Ultimately, I found that healthcare, nursing and leadership provided the perfect combination of purpose, challenge and variety. They allowed me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others while continually learning and growing myself.
While it may sound cliche’, this journey has shaped far more than my career. The experiences I’ve had- particularly through leadership – have transformed the way I think, strengthened my relationships, and deepened my appreciation for the impact we can have on one another. They have taught me that meaningful connections, continuous growth and serving others are what bring the greatest fulfillment in both my professional and personal life.
