Exploring Life & Business with Detroit Fashion Community

Today we’d like to introduce you to Detroit Fashion Community. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Detroit Fashion Community was founded in 2019 by Latrice Delgado-Macon. She had a vision to create a space where all fashion-centric individuals could collaborate and build a sustainable future for the fashion industry in Detroit. It was off to a great start, but then the pandemic happened. It paused the momentum, and now the Detroit Fashion Community has come back in 2023 with a vengeance (in a good way). With a fresh new Board of Directors under the leadership of Executive Director Lauren M. Woodson, the new Detroit Fashion Community has grown exponentially in less than 5 months.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth ride. The ride has been full of challenges. One of the challenges being- gaining the trust of the community. Many organizations come and go, but Detroiter’s are understandably skeptical and hold the bar high. They want to see what the organization is made of before lending confidence. There have been many attempts at bringing the fashion community together in the past with no success, and people are scarred. We’d like to reenergize that spark.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The mission of the Detroit Fashion Community is to empower every person with creative aspirations to find their place and sustain the spark of innovation within the fashion community. Our goal is to reach, enrich and support the community.

We are the key source to exclusive access to Detroit’s most influential and fashionable movers and shakers. We offer an array of thoughtfully curated benefits through three levels of membership: the Executive Member, the Socialite Member, and the Apprentice. We offer benefits like: Fashion and Creative Community Support, a Fashion Business Directory, Community Partnerships (Discounts), Volunteer Opportunities, Member Spotlights, VIP Event Pricing, Increased Brand Awareness, and more.

We have amazing events; our most popular is our DFC Connects monthly industry networking event. It happens every first Wednesday of the month.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Mentorship is valuable. Networking is necessary to success. The DFC hosts a networking event every first Wednesday each month, called DFC Connects. It promotes career development and resource sharing of industry professionals. It has been working well for the community.
