Exploring Life & Business with Dawn Thomas of Dawn Thomas Physical Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Thomas.

Hi Dawn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my career as a traveling physical therapist right out of grad school, crisscrossing the country and learning to adapt quickly in all kinds of clinical settings. It was an incredible way to grow both professionally and personally. I gained confidence, saw a wide range of patient needs, and learned how to deliver care in all types of environments—from big city hospitals to small-town clinics.

After a few years on the road, I came back home to Michigan and spent over two decades working in just about every setting imaginable within major hospital systems—acute care, outpatient, inpatient rehab—you name it. I’ve always been driven to learn, so during that time I pursued advanced manual therapy training, earned my doctorate, and even taught graduate-level physical therapy courses. I loved building a deep toolbox of skills that I could immediately apply to help people feel and function better.

Then came 2020. During the height of the pandemic, when everything was turned upside down, I saw a real gap in care. Patients were struggling to get the help they needed, and I realized I could step in. I’d already been feeling the strain of working within the traditional medical system—insurance restrictions, reduced reimbursement, and the increasing pressure to do more with less. It became harder and harder to provide the kind of high-level, individualized care I believed in.

So I took the leap and started my own mobile concierge physical therapy and wellness practice: Dawn Thomas Physical Therapy PLLC. Now, I work with clients one-on-one in their homes, offering expert, personalized care without the red tape. It’s been the most rewarding chapter of my career—helping people who are motivated to truly improve their health and function, and doing it in a way that honors both their goals and my expertise.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In many ways, it’s been smoother than I expected. I was lucky to build a strong client base early on, and the growth of the business has been steady and fulfilling. But that doesn’t mean it’s been easy.

The biggest challenge for me has been learning how to turn it off. My mind is constantly going—thinking about patients, the business, new ideas, and now, how to best support my team. I have employees now, and that’s added a new layer of responsibility. I feel a strong drive to build a sustainable system that not only supports the people we serve, but also creates an environment where therapists can find joy in their work again.

I’m still learning how to strike that balance. I try to make space for the things that fill me up—traveling with my family, kayaking, hiking, and biking—but I haven’t mastered it yet. I’m working on being more intentional about creating time to recharge, because I know it ultimately makes me a better leader, therapist, and human.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Dawn Thomas Physical Therapy?
We’re a small, passionate group of concierge Doctors of Physical Therapy who specialize in private, one-on-one therapy and wellness sessions delivered right in your home. What sets us apart is our ability to provide deeply personalized care—whether you’re recovering from a stroke, managing chronic pain, sustained a neck or back injury or your training for your next rock-climbing trip. We meet you where you are, both literally and figuratively.

We’re known for our problem-solving skills and clinical expertise. People often find us when they’ve tried everything else—like the client with a mysteriously weak leg months after hip surgery, where no one could quite figure out what was wrong. That’s where we shine: getting to the root of the issue and creating a plan that actually works. We’re not about cookie-cutter programs—we’re about solving real problems with real results.

What makes us truly different is our unmatched skill level and the level of attention and follow-through we give to each person. From customized exercise programs to direct communication with your physicians and family members, we handle the details so you can focus on getting better. We also take the time to educate you on the why behind what we’re doing—because when you understand your body, you’re empowered to take care of it long term.

Our driving belief is that movement is medicine—and through movement, you can extend your wellness years, not just your lifespan. We don’t just treat injury; we build resilience, improve function, and help people move better for life.

I’m most proud of the fact that we truly change lives. Watching someone return to an activity they love—playing with grandkids, golfing again, hiking a trail they thought was out of reach—that’s what drives us. It’s not just physical therapy, it’s about helping people reclaim their independence, confidence, and joy.

And here’s something most people don’t know: you don’t need a prescription to see a physical therapist. We can be your first stop when something doesn’t feel right or even when nothing feels wrong. We evaluate movement—posture, strength, flexibility, endurance, balance—even if you’re not in pain. We work with everything from post-stroke recovery (even years after onset), to head injuries, Parkinson’s, post-op rehab, arthritis, general stiffness, fall prevention, and performance enhancement—including golf-specific training with ourTitleist Performance Institute certification. We use exercise, therapeutic movement, manual therapy and many more tools to achieve the best outcome.

We want people to know: it’s not normal to struggle to get off the floor or go up stairs—no matter your age. And you don’t have to wait until things are “bad enough” to get help from a doctor of physical therapy. We work with people at all stages of recovery and sometimes after insurance benefits run out, or in addition to clinic or home care PT, to fill the gaps and make sure all your needs are met.

Behind the scenes, we’ve built a team culture rooted in excellence, collaboration, and mentorship. Our therapists are problem solvers who thrive on figuring out the tough stuff—and we support each other in delivering the highest level of care. We’re as passionate about helping our team grow as we are about helping our clients thrive.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
The first thing that popped into my mind was running through open fields, catching caterpillars and butterflies. I used to collect them in little containers so I could watch them transform—it felt like magic. To this day, I still love wandering in nature. Maybe it reminds me of those carefree days, running barefoot in the grass with no agenda other than exploring and being curious. It was pure freedom—and I think that spirit still shows up in how I live, work, and play today.
