Exploring Life & Business with Danielle McKee of Futtitinni Events

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle McKee.

Danielle, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Ever since I was a little girl, I was fascinated by weddings. Looking back, I think part of that fascination came from being drawn to the joy, connection, and love that weddings represent. I was always curious about what brought people together and how those moments were created.

My journey into the event industry started when I was 14 years old working at a golf course, where I was first exposed to weddings and special events. What started as a part-time job quickly turned into a passion. Over the years, I worked in nearly every corner of the industry, including catering and hospitality, floral design, invitation and stationery design, venue operations, and event coordination.

Those experiences gave me something incredibly valuable: an understanding of how all the moving pieces work together behind the scenes. I learned the language of each vendor, the logistics that clients never see, and the countless details that transform an event from good to exceptional.

While building my career, I continued planning events and eventually founded Futtitinni Events in 2018. Today, I serve couples and organizations throughout Michigan, helping them create celebrations that feel authentic to who they are rather than following a formula or trend.

What I love most about this work is that every event tells a different story. My role isn’t to create the event I would want. It’s to understand my clients, guide them through the process, and bring their vision to life in a way that feels uniquely theirs. My background across so many areas of the industry allows me to approach planning with both creativity and strategy, helping clients navigate decisions with confidence while creating experiences that feel meaningful, personal, and memorable.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, although I don’t think most worthwhile things are.

One of the biggest challenges was launching my business in 2018 and then watching the events industry come to a standstill in 2020. Like many event professionals, I suddenly found myself navigating cancellations, uncertainty, and wondering whether I had made the right decision pursuing this path. Looking back, that period became one of the greatest tests of resilience I’ve experienced as a business owner.

What I’ve learned over the years is that many of the hardest challenges aren’t logistical, they’re personal. Building a business requires a tremendous amount of self-awareness, emotional resilience, and the willingness to have difficult conversations. It means showing up on days when you’re discouraged, making decisions with incomplete information, and continuing to move forward even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.

One lesson I’ve come back to repeatedly is that growth in business often mirrors growth as a person. Every challenge has forced me to become a better communicator, a better leader, and a more adaptable problem solver.

Through it all, I’ve stayed connected to the reason I started in the first place: I genuinely enjoy helping people. Whether it’s guiding a couple through one of the most important days of their lives or helping a client navigate a stressful situation, I find a lot of fulfillment in bringing clarity and calm to moments that feel overwhelming. That purpose has carried me through every challenge so far.

As you know, we’re big fans of Futtitinni Events. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Futtitinni Events is a Michigan-based event planning company specializing in weddings, corporate events, and meaningful celebrations of all kinds. While every event is different, our focus is always the same: creating experiences that feel authentic to the people they are designed for.

What sets us apart is our approach. I don’t believe my job is to create the event I would want. My job is to understand my clients, listen carefully to what matters most to them, and help bring their vision to life in a way that feels personal, intentional, and true to who they are.

Throughout my career, I’ve worked in multiple areas of the event industry, including hospitality, floral design, stationery, venue operations, and event coordination. That experience allows me to see the bigger picture while understanding the countless details that go into creating a successful event. It also helps me collaborate effectively with vendors and build strong partnerships that ultimately benefit my clients.

One thing I’m especially proud of is the relationships we’ve built over the years. While professionalism is incredibly important, I never want clients to feel like they’re just another project on a spreadsheet. Planning significant life events requires trust, and I take that responsibility seriously. Many of our clients become friends, and many of our vendor relationships have grown into genuine partnerships.

At its core, the brand is built on connection, collaboration, and service. I love beautiful design and elevated experiences, but I believe the most memorable events aren’t memorable because they looked perfect. They’re memorable because people felt something. Whether it’s a wedding, corporate gathering, fundraiser, or community event, my goal is always to create an experience that leaves people feeling welcomed, cared for, and connected.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the next 5-10 years, I believe we’ll continue to see a shift away from tradition for tradition’s sake and toward events that feel more personal and intentional.

For many years, there was an expectation that weddings followed a fairly standard formula. Today, couples are asking different questions. Instead of asking what they’re supposed to do, they’re asking what feels right for them. As a result, we’re seeing more customized experiences, non-traditional timelines, unique entertainment, personalized design elements, and celebrations that reflect the personalities of the people hosting them.

I also think we’ll continue to see a greater emphasis on guest experience. People want their events to feel memorable, interactive, and meaningful rather than simply checking off a list of traditions. Whether it’s a wedding, corporate event, or social gathering, guests want to feel connected to the experience rather than just attend it.

From a design perspective, I see continued movement toward individuality. We’re already seeing clients move away from cookie-cutter aesthetics and embrace more color, personality, custom installations, and creative ways to tell their story through an event. The goal is becoming less about recreating what someone saw online and more about creating something that feels uniquely their own.

Technology will certainly continue to play a role in planning and event management, but I believe the demand for genuine human connection will only grow. In a world where so much of our communication happens through screens, gathering people together in meaningful ways becomes even more valuable. That’s one reason I’m so excited about the future of this industry.
