Exploring Life & Business with Danialle Karmanos of Danialle’s Clubhouse

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danialle Karmanos.

Hi Danialle, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.

Danialle’s Clubhouse is a social club for women located in Downtown Birmingham. I had a vision of a safe, dynamic, energized, and interesting space for women to gather for everything from lectures on hormones and self empowerment to fun activities, such as our Mahjong learning series.

I believe in the importance of community and connections in a joyful, safe space. Each of us are the sum of our experiences – joy, pain, perseverance, struggle, survival, innovation, and happiness. We all have beautiful, important, complicated stories to tell that become the building blocks for healing, validation, knowledge…and fun.

The Clubhouse is for anyone women who is looking to grow her mind, improve her health, explore a new hobby, or simply to connect with others.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?

It’s actually been very smooth, but I think that’s because we approached the launch, which happened in January, in a slow, methodical way. It was important for us not to jump into our programming thinking we know everything women want. Hearing from the women of our community was most important. They are who we fully want to serve and know they are getting the various educational topics and activities that matter most to them.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

A community-driven space for women, Danialle’s Clubhouse is all about renewing the art of connection. Our mission is to inspire women to learn, grow, and connect in a safe space through engaging experiences that uplift and support one another. Our promise is to make women feel comfortable and their story welcome at The Clubhouse.

That welcoming feel happens the moment a woman steps through our front door. They are greeted warmly and invited into a beautiful, intimate, and colorful space. From our signature fragrance to the inspirational reads on our bookshelf, The Clubhouse embodies a receptive and hospitable environment for all women.

The Clubhouse pillars are Mind, Body, Empowerment, and Community. Every even we host will touch on at least one of these pillars.

Our first event was a talk on hormones for women in their 40s and 50s. It was a huge hit and our attendees have let us know they want more on this important topic.

Learning to play American Mahjong was high on my list of activities to introduce, but I had no idea it would take off the way it has! To date, we’ve run four sessions teaching this popular – yet complex – game and have introduced Mahjong Guided Play nights for women who have gone through the sessions, or already know how to play the game, and want to continue playing with instructors on hand to guide them as needed.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?

Life is risk, isn’t it? Everything we do, if we are putting ourselves out there, involves a degree of risk. We could have gone through all the research and planning we did and launched The Clubhouse and found we didn’t have the interest level we thought we would. But where would be the joy in not attempting something that I’m both passionate and energized about?”

We didn’t conduct a hard data research study, but I don’t want it to seem flip or imply this was created unintentionally or on a whim.
Before our first event we had a year of meetings. (Mostly with SEEN magazine, hoping their features would be our hot topics.) Unfortunately, that didn’t work, but it was still a lot of meetings and brainstorming and pivoting to zero in on what people want: the content, demographics, activities, length, etc.
I actually had the idea for The Clubhouse 10 years ago when we first rented the space. It’s taken that long to collect information and find the right time to create The Clubhouse.
Over those 10 years I’ve talked to a lot of people and done a lot investigating around the country. From LA and Monticeto to Tucson and Sedona. I’ve personally visited, talked to and immersed myself in similar experiences to explore what works and what doesn’t. And, specifically, what works for our community in Metro Detroit.
Ive tried to bring that information back to create a specific space that resonates in a meaningful way. We value the time of anyone who attends events at The Clubhouse and make sure we are providing first-class experiences that are thoughtfully crafted and vetted.
