Exploring Life & Business with Chantele Jones of Estella’s Vegan Cuisine and Desserts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chantele Jones.

Hi Chantele, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I come from a family of great cooks and bakers but due to health reasons, I decided to follow a vegan diet. I still wanted to enjoy the foods I had grown to love but had to learn how to prepare them vegan. Soon my family and friends started asking me to cook for them to, they always gave my food rave reviews. So I later decided to start a business, initially catering and offering cooking classes. Then it grew to monthly pop ups at local bars and restaurants, and it’s continued to take off from there.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Initially, it was challenging finding mentorship and funding, since then Detroit has started several new programs for small business owners that we have connected with and have been a huge help with getting us where we are today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We recently opened Estella’s Vegan Dessert Boutique. Detroit’s first all vegan bakery. We’re home of the vegan pound cake. I’m the owner and head baker. Estella’s is named after my grandma, she’s who taught me how to bake. I am proud to share my family recipes and offer great tasting desserts that just happen to be vegan.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Stay the course, don’t quit!
