Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Smith.
Hi Brittany, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in the small town of Whitmore Lake, and after graduating from Pinckney High School, I was eager to go to college. After I graduated from Wayne State University with a Criminal Justice degree, I was a bit lost. I was unable to land a job in that field, and after a few years, I’d become fearful that I wouldn’t find my place in this world. In 2018 I decide to take charge of my life and follow my dreams of being an entrepreneur. I don’t believe in leaving stones unturned, so when God gave me the vision to start a beauty supply, I got started immediately. Belleville did not have a beauty supply at the time, so it was the perfect location for me to learn and grow. It’s a great feeling when you can provide hair, nail, and skin products for all genders and ages. The store is name after my Aunt Charlotte, whose nickname was Char-She. Char-She was so kind, loving, and caring, and that is what I want my business to reflect.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Most beauty supplies in Detroit and Metro Detroit have wall-to-wall inventory. My biggest challenge has been getting enough inventory to be a sort of “one-stop shop” beauty supply like my competitors. But my struggle has not been in vain; many doors have been opening for me to increase my inventory and improve my business.
As you know, we’re big fans of Char-She Beauty Supply. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
I opened Char-She Beauty Supply in 2018 in Belleville. My store carries a variety of beauty items like wigs, hair extensions, braiding hair, eyelashes, make-up, jewelry, nail products, skincare, hair products, and hair accessories. Although my store is beautiful, I like getting outside the four walls sometimes. Every year my store is involved in some type of outdoor events like College Welcome Day, Halloween Candy Loop, and 4th of July Parade. Giving back to the community is important to me; it’s how I was raised, so I make sure I donate hair products to the local homeless shelters as much as I can.
What matters most to you?
Having a balanced life is very important to me. As a business owner, your workday doesn’t really end, there is always something that needs to be done. However, making time for my family, friends, and hobbies keeps my life balanced. It allows me to truly live life to the fullest.
