Exploring Life & Business with Briton Maciuk of Luma Detroit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Briton Maciuk.

Hi Briton, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I first got into video at age 14 when I bought my very first camcorder at a yard sale. From there, I started making all sorts of home videos, and that early experimentation really sparked my passion for filmmaking.
In high school, I almost always chose to create videos for my projects and essays instead of writing traditional papers or presenting them live in front of the class. My real introduction to professional production didn’t come from school drama classes—I never even took theater. It happened after school, when the auditorium was rented out for concerts and live events. That’s where I learned lighting and sound from the production manager who handled those shows. Mastering those three core elements—lighting, sound, and video—gave me a solid foundation that let me step beyond schoolwork and into the professional world.
Right after graduating high school, I landed my first job at a production company that handled large public and private events. My very first gig was on Thanksgiving Day at Detroit’s Ford Field for the halftime show.

Years after working in the live performance space and corporate world, I decided to start my own company and focus on live video broadcasting

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a grassroots company is never easy, especially when I launched mine just before the COVID pandemic hit, during shifting political landscapes and economic recessions. It’s always been difficult to get customers to truly understand and appreciate the value of our work.
My company has always focused on the quality of each project rather than the quantity of work in the video production industry. A lot of jobs have been taken away by technologies like smartphones with their excellent built-in cameras, as well as the rise of AI, which is eliminating much of the post-production work.
Early on, I did handle post-production, but I’ve always found it extremely time-consuming and expensive. AI has only reinforced what I already knew: post-production isn’t the path to keeping a company sustainable long-term. The real future is in the live, in-the-moment experience.
In this fast-moving industry, you have to constantly stay current with the latest trends and technologies while making your workflow as efficient, fast, and reliable as possible. The live aspect has been ideal for us because turnaround times for deliverables are essentially instantaneous; we deliver right in the moment.
The biggest challenge is finding a niche between the mega-large corporations that hold all the major contracts and the smaller events that are too modest for those giants. We aim to be the cost-effective solution for clients who are new to live events—whether in the corporate space or live performances, offering professional quality without the big-corporation price tag.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Luma Detroit?
Luma Detroit is the experience. The most fleeting thing in life is a moment, whether it’s a concert or performance with your favorite artist, a powerful word from an influential mind, or whatever the occasion may be. Luma Detroit is that moment. We capture and share the moment, in the moment.
We are known for our emphasis on quality: the quality of the image, the careful planning of the production, the quality of the sound, the look of the lighting. We emphasize every aspect of our work. Luma focuses on drawing the best from every profession across the entertainment industry tasking expert producers, engineers, and operators to bring their individual crafts together and create a superior video production. It’s not enough to simply point a camera at something and let it be. We emphasize the composition of everything.
I’m most proud that my brand has the freedom to give the client what they truly deserve. It’s one thing to just quote a price, deliver a standard product, and crank out content. We’re able to say, “Let’s add this equipment,” or “Let’s add this angle,” or “Let’s take more time to make this look better.” The client may or may not come from our industry, we are their guide, helping the final project look its absolute best and making sure they feel well cared for, even if it comes at the expense of our bottom line.
Luma Detroit isn’t solely interested in making money. Though it does make the world go round. We’re willing to help clients who haven’t paid us a penny, pointing them in the right direction to achieve the best possible result. We bring the mom-and-pop touch with the power of any large production house. We make our customers feel comfortable and truly taken care of.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Because Luma Detroit focuses primarily on live video production, most people in the industry or who know my company only see me as a video guy. But when I first entered this world, I started as a theatrical lighting designer. That foundation translates directly into video: without excellent lighting, you simply cannot achieve high-quality video. Similarly, I have spent years working as a sound engineer across all kinds of events, and that experience integrates seamlessly into the full scope of what we deliver at the company.
I have worked hands-on in every single aspect of live production, from the most entry-level roles to the highest-level positions. This complete range of knowledge, from lighting and sound to staging, engineering, and video, is exactly what allows me to maintain such high standards at Luma Detroit. It ensures nothing falls through the cracks and that every element of a live production is handled with real expertise and care. Even the things that don’t appear on screen.
