Today we’d like to introduce you to Beverly Beal Jr. Beverly Beal-Hogan.
Hi Beverly Beal Jr., thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Detroit Brew-ti-ful Coffee House is truly a family dream. My mom and I have always shared a passion for bringing people together, and we wanted to create more than just a coffee shop—we wanted to create a place where our community feels seen, welcomed, and inspired. As lifelong Detroiters, we’ve watched our city evolve, and we felt called to invest in the neighborhoods that have poured so much into us.
While I built my career as an intellectual property attorney helping entrepreneurs protect and grow their businesses, my mom has spent more than 20 years serving Detroit families through the daycare centers she owns and operates Busy Minds Child Care Center and Bright Minds Child Care Center. She has helped care for and educate generations of children, building lasting relationships with parents and families throughout the community. Her commitment to service and community has always been an inspiration to me.
Together, we combined our different strengths to build Detroit Brew-ti-ful Coffee House as an extension of that same mission—a place where people can gather, connect, and feel at home. Today, we’re proud to be a family-owned, Black-owned, women-owned business that not only serves great coffee but also supports local entrepreneurs, creates meaningful connections, and continues investing in the city that has given so much to us.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We feel incredibly fortunate because, overall, it has been a pretty smooth journey. From the moment we opened our doors, the community embraced us, and we took that as a sign that we were in the right place at the right time, doing something people truly wanted and needed.
A big part of that is our connection to the neighborhood. Our coffee shop is located right next door to the daycare my mom has owned and operated for more than 20 years, so we’ve built relationships with generations of families long before we ever started serving coffee. There was already a foundation of trust, and many of those same families were excited to support this new chapter.
Of course, we’ve had the normal challenges that come with running any small business—managing inventory, staffing, and navigating day-to-day operations—but nothing that has changed our vision. Every challenge has been an opportunity to learn, improve, and continue serving our community even better.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At the heart of everything we do is a commitment to building businesses that create opportunities and strengthen our community. Together, my mom and I have built companies that span childcare, hospitality, law, entrepreneurship, and consumer products, but they all share the same mission: serving people with excellence and creating lasting impact.
I am an intellectual property attorney and founder of Beverly Beal Law, where I help entrepreneurs protect and grow their brands through trademarks, contracts, and business strategy. I’m also the founder of GiftBiz, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering entrepreneurs through education, mentorship, and resources, and the creator of Fine Line, a non-alcoholic spirits brand designed to help people celebrate without compromising their wellness or lifestyle. Across all of my businesses, my passion is helping people turn ideas into lasting legacies.
My mom has spent more than 20 years serving Detroit families as the owner of Busy and Bright Minds Child Care Centers, where she has helped educate and care for generations of children. With a background and education in finance, she has combined her business expertise with her passion for serving families to build organizations that make a meaningful difference. Today, she also co-owns two Detroit Brew-ti-ful Coffee House locations, continuing her lifelong commitment to creating welcoming spaces that bring people together.
What sets us apart is that we’re not just building businesses—we’re building community. Whether it’s caring for children, helping entrepreneurs protect their dreams, creating products that encourage healthier choices, or welcoming neighbors into our coffee shops, every business we own is rooted in service, relationships, and a genuine love for Detroit. That’s what we’re most proud of, and it’s what we hope people feel every time they interact with one of our brands.
What’s next?
Right now, our focus is on continuing to grow Detroit Brew-ti-ful Coffee House while staying true to the community that helped us get started. We want to keep delivering a great experience, investing in our neighborhoods, and building a brand that people know and trust.
Our biggest goal is expansion. We envision Detroit Brew-ti-ful Coffee House growing into a franchise that creates opportunities for other families to become business owners. We know firsthand how entrepreneurship can change lives, and we’d love to build a model that allows others to create generational wealth while bringing the same sense of community and connection to their own neighborhoods. That’s the future we’re most excited about.
