Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Betsey Caldwell.
Dr. Caldwell, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I graduated from Azusa Pacific University with my doctorate degree in physical therapy. I specialized in women’s health physical therapy because I loved helping women with issues that can often feel embarrassing to talk about. During my first job, I realized that I loved working with pregnant and postpartum women. So many of my patients were experiencing aching, leaking, and dysfunction during or after pregnancy and felt lost. It was so special being able to help them along their journey towards healing and rediscovering their bodies after such a big life change. I quickly became frustrated with the current childbirth education model because so many of my postpartum moms felt traumatized by their labor and delivery experience. I could not help but think, “why is childbirth education setting up moms for failure?” We should feel empowered and prepared walking into our birth room, not bewildered and terrified.
It was with this in mind that I decided to create my own virtual labor and delivery course, the Push Lab. I help moms prepare physically, mentally, and spiritually for childbirth so that they can walk away from their childbirth experience feeling victorious rather than traumatized. I also have made it my mission to bust common pregnancy and postpartum myths on my social media pages. We are told so much misinformation during pregnancy that is setting us up for feeling regret and disappointed in our childbirth experience. I am here to revolutionize childbirth education and help moms prepare to the best of their ability!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
When I first began realizing that childbirth education was not preparing pregnant moms for empowering childbirths, I tried marketing my pregnancy prep services to midwives and obgyns. Part of my training is helping women prepare for childbirth but yet, very few pregnant moms were being referred to my office. The moms who DID end up seeing me during pregnancy were blown away with the information and methods I taught them for childbirth. I often heard, “wow, I never learned any of this during my hospital birth class!”
I began marketing my services to birth providers but was met with a lot of resistance. Why change the system? So many OBGYNs and Midwives do not refer their patients to pelvic floor physical therapy until after the baby is born. This is robbing countless moms of experiencing a joyful birth. Pelvic floor physical therapists can not only help take away aches, leaks, and pain during pregnancy but we can also teach safe push techniques, safe birth positions, how to prepare physically for childbirth, etc.
I decided to take my marketing efforts to social media and began educating moms on the internet. In essence, I cut out the middle man (OBGYNs and midwives) and began directly supporting moms virtually. It has been such a blessing seeing how the fruits of my labor have helped moms with their own empowered labors!
As you know, we’re big fans of Yes Mama Co. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Yes Mama Co. provides virtual childbirth education to women worldwide. We specialize in helping moms prepare physically, mentally, and spiritually for childbirth so they can walk away feeling empowered from their childbirth experience.
The Push Lab is revolutionizing childbirth education by no longer promoting old-school birthing advice like flat back birthing, breath-hold pushing, or performing kegels to prepare the body for childbirth. The course is pre-recorded, go at your own pace, and includes a bonus exercise library teaching women how to actually prepare their bodies for pushing out a baby to minimize perineal tearing and birth injuries.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
Moms who sign up for my virtual birth class have access to me via email support and during live Q&As and webinars. I am also on social media
