Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisa Peskin-shepherd
Hi Alisa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I chose to practice family law after spending the early years of my life witnessing family dysfunction. Relationships came and went, and I yearned for security through strong family dynamics. My early personal experiences taught me empathy and an easy connection to people experiencing family struggles, and I thought I wanted to go into social work, but I was dissuaded from that career because I wanted to be sure I could support myself and my future family.
I am a strong leader with an open mind, and I am often in the role of teaching others to cultivate strength to get through difficult times. I am determined, I have great perseverance, and I am very disciplined, and all of this has come in handy as I’ve built my legal career. But I also have a healthy respect for family, so when I work with divorce clients, I don’t just see a client–I see a person with family connections and relationships that factor into our work, too. I care about them, what they’re going through, where they’ve been, and most importantly, where they are going.
I started out as a lawyer, but over the years I’ve added on specialties. I’m a Mediator and a Collaborative Divorce professional. I’ve practiced law in Michigan for more than 30 years, mostly in Southeast Michigan.
While family law is my focus, I’ve also had experience in school and employment law, and I can act as a guardian-ad-litem, protecting the interests of children within the legal system. I’ve completed special training in domestic violence through the State Bar of Michigan Open Justice Commission and led workshops for Wayne State University and the Michigan Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers on topics related to divorce, counseling and mediation.
I belong to so many associations. The one I love most is the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals, through which I’ve met colleagues and made friends in this work from literally around the world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Well, family law is not necessarily a fun-and-games type of law to practice! I see great people at their worst moments. That can be hard. But I consider it an honor to be trusted to guide people through a messy time in their lives and be an instrumental resource in helping them start over, build a life they are happy to live, and see new possibilities ahead.
As a strong woman, I’ve also been called “aggressive” for advocating on behalf of my clients. That’s because I don’t back down when I am fighting for someone’s rights. For someone’s life, really! I think the word “assertive” is more appropriate, and accurate. Maybe protective, even.
