Hi Adam, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The Story of Scan Bud
In 2021, Adam Drucz was driving for Michigan’s largest cannabis transport company when he saw a problem that was impossible to ignore. The intake process for transfers was stuck in the past—paper manifests, manual counting, and endless checks that were slow, inefficient, and full of opportunities for error. Drivers, operators, and receivers all felt the friction and unease that came with a system so prone to mistakes and so draining of time.
Adam tried small improvements on his own, but he quickly realized the real answer had to be technological. One day behind the wheel, he had a clear revelation—a vision from outside himself: What if I built the solution? He began researching what it would take to learn to code and create an app. The path looked steep and lonely. He pitched the idea to a major player in the cannabis industry and got nowhere. Then life intervened. Active addiction to drugs and alcohol pulled him under, and the idea went quiet.
In May 2022, everything changed. Adam had a life-altering encounter with Jesus that pulled him from the edge of death and gave him a second chance. Two weeks into sobriety, he felt God impress on him that he would one day own a technology company. Later that year, at church for the first time, he met Rob Borer. They connected over shared faith and a mutual interest in strength training. Adam, a personal trainer for a decade, helped Rob build strength through resistance training; Rob went on to set two state records in his age and weight class and is still chasing more. Their friendship grew around Jesus, the gym, and eventually politics.
At a political event they attended together, Adam struck up a conversation with a woman whose son was a prominent figure in the cannabis industry and decided to pitch his old idea. Rob overheard. On the drive home he asked Adam to tell him more. By the time they arrived, Rob proposed a partnership. With Rob’s proven multi-decade business expertise, technical engineering background, and their shared worldview, Adam knew it was the right fit. He said yes.
In March 2023, Scan Bud officially became a company. Adam has been clear that he could never have done it alone and remains grateful for the partner he found in Rob. Rob’s technical engineering knowledge played a critical role in outlining exactly what the app needed to do, while his decades of business wisdom and experience guided the company’s formation and direction. He also stepped in as the financial backer who made the vision possible and helped assemble the development team. The road took longer than expected—the first development company didn’t reach the finish line, so they brought on another team whose expertise and effort have been essential. After a couple of years of hard, rewarding work, the app is in the final stages of going live, and Scan Bud is actively looking for transport companies ready to pilot it.
What Scan Bud Does
Scan Bud is a mobile-first data capture and identification platform built specifically for the cannabis logistics industry. Here’s how it works in practice:
Manifests created in METRC automatically appear on the Scan Bud dashboard.
Operators assign those manifests to specific drivers and vehicles.
Drivers receive the manifests on their phones in the correct order and simply scan METRC tag barcodes at pickup, layover, and delivery.
The system confirms every package is present, captures digital signatures, and maintains a clear digital chain of custody.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The Challenges
Getting Scan Bud to this point has not been easy. Early on, Adam faced the reality that he simply lacked the technical skills to build the solution he envisioned. Finances were another major barrier, and as someone still in the grip of active addiction, holding a steady job—let alone launching and running a company—felt nearly impossible. Deep spiritual sickness, self-doubt, and unresolved wounds kept him from gaining any real traction. Looking back, it is clear that without finding Jesus and later meeting Rob, the entire effort would have been impossible; Adam was, in a very real sense, dying before he got sober.
Even after the company was formed, obstacles continued. The first development team was paid for a product they never finished. They lacked the capability to deliver what was needed. That decision itself stemmed from earlier financial pressure—the original quote to build the project exceeded $120,000, so the founders turned to a lower-cost option in Pakistan that ultimately could not meet the requirements.
By the grace of God they found a second development company that has been excellent, yet the build has still taken far longer than expected. The technical complexity and level of detail required to create a premium, attractive product have demanded patience and persistence.
The next set of challenges is already clear: piloting the app, cleaning up any remaining loose ends, and uncovering use cases that may have been missed. Putting the tool into the hands of transport companies will likely meet some friction—changing a process that has been done the old way for years is rarely seamless. Still, the founders believe operators will recognize the value quickly once they experience it.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
This answer is from me, Adam.
Growing up, I was the kid who constantly asked “why.” Part of it was defiance, but a big part was a real desire to understand how things worked. I was a hard kid—got in trouble a lot and made my parents’ lives difficult at times. I was pretty selfish, and my behavior nearly got me kicked out of middle school.
That started to change in high school when I began wrestling. The discipline of the sport turned me around. I went from flunking classes to taking advanced placement courses. My interest in technology started around age 10. My dad was an appliance repairman for Sears, and I was fascinated watching him work. He had this deep knowledge of electronic hardware that amazed me—he could fix things most people had no concept of how to even approach. I would stand over his shoulder while he soldered circuit boards, completely absorbed. Software fascinated me too. I was always wondering how the software actually got onto the hardware.
That curiosity turned practical. I started fixing Xbox consoles for my friends and even modifying and hacking them so we could play any game we wanted on demand. Outside of tech, once I got into high school I also developed a real love for exercise. That eventually grew into bodybuilding, which I pursued seriously for about ten years.
Rob’s childhood involved sports, nature and science. Early on Rob was involved with team sports of all kinds, with basketball and soccer becoming the ones that stuck the longest before competitiveness squeezed him out into individual sports like mountain biking and windsurfing, both of which lasted well into married life.
Rob’s childhood was filled with outdoor activities due to his father’s love of the outdoors. Rob was involved with the Boy Scouts where he learned to love camping and being self-sufficient. He also became an avid sailor of smaller dingy boats that he learned to sail with his father, first as a crew member and later a proper skipper himself. This love for the outdoors has led Rob’s family to enjoy camping at State parks as one of its most looked forward to annual getaways.
Rob also had a strong curiosity for how things work. He was constantly disassembling mechanical objects and putting them back together. In fact he even disassembled his high school transportation, a 2 cylinder motorcycle, down to the bare bolts, rehabbed everything and reassembled the vehicle and continued to drive it to school throughout all of his high school years.
Rob graduated to working on classic automobiles and frustrated his future wife by picking her up for dates in vehicles in various stages of restoration, often lacking creature comforts such as heat or various other expected amenities of a vehicle, none of which was appreciated by her. Despite this less than glamorous courtship, Rob and his wife Sherri have been married 30+ years.
All this messing around with mechanical stuff steered Rob towards an engineering degree and several years in industry as an engineer.
At about the time Rob’s corporate engineering career path was most frustrating, his entrepreneurial gene was starting to kick in. A career change to becoming a chiropractor launched a 30+ year path of self-employment taking one’s success into one’s own hands and starting serving the public in private practice.
Over all of these events of course was God’s hand. And God’s holy spirit finally filled Rob and brought him to declare him as his Lord and savior and he was baptised in 2019. I mention this not only that it is the most important detail to share about Rob’s life, but that in God’s wisdom it is the very thing that brought Rob into the life of now Scan Bud co-founder Adam’s life. Rob and Adam met at the church at which Rob was baptised. Their mutual interest in body building drew them together and allowed their friendship to develop. And now the fruits of this friendship has led to the creation of Scan Bud.
