Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Straughter-Sturgis.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve started my non-profit as a way to give back to the city that has given me so much. I’ve lived through mistakes as a teenager and grown and progressed with the guidance of another non-profit. I’ve always said if I am ever able to start my own non-profit, I would do what was done for me.
I was fortunate to have a mother who inspired me to be my best. Growing up, my mother was a shining example of hard work and discipline. I watched as my mom persevered and triumphed over many challenges. Today, many young women do not have the same example that I had growing up. I am a firm believer that my life experiences, both the good and the bad, and the challenges I have gone through do two things. The first is that they have given me grit, making me stronger. The second is that they can be used to help someone else grow and learn from my mistakes.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Our program has had a slow start, but I am committed to moving forward.
There have been days when we put on an event, and only 2 people show up. Yes, it is very frustrating as a small start up non-profit with no grant funding; my sisters and I continue to show up for our community. Through it all, if we can help those few people, I have done my job.
I will not stop, because there is someone out there that needs our help and I want to be sure to be available to answer the call.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work full-time as an Office Supervisor. I work for Ennis Center for Children. What I am most proud of is that I work in the city for my professional job and my non-profit. Working in the city that I want to serve means a lot to me. Clients feel more comfortable when they know you are from the same place; they relate and are more willing to open up.

There isn’t anything people don’t know about me. I’m pretty much an open book. I’ve never been afraid to tell my story.
