Daily Inspiration: Meet Thurston Campbell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thurston Campbell.

Thurston Campbell

Hi Thurston, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started in Atlanta while working in the music industry. I was writing and music, and one of the team members happened to work for one of the big Junk Removal companies in the industry. He asked if I was interested in working there, and I said sure. The phrase another man’s junk is another man’s treasure was an understatement. I literally fell in love with the daily hunt of never knowing what we were going to get. It ranged from tips, autographed memorabilia, and furniture to cars. Yes, cars! Well, I worked there for a few years then moved on to another big junk removal company taking on a new role. Even interviewed with CNN about the new company stating, “one day I’d like to own my own.” Well, that day just so happened to be 10yrs later in 2016. After moving back to Detroit from Atlanta in 2012, I worked for Chrysler for 4yrs. I like to say I graduated from Chrysler, took my 401k bought a truck, and never looked back. Junk Starz the company formed then from one truck and a dream to now having several trucks, employees, and dumpsters. I’m forever grateful for the community and abroad receiving us so well. My son and I have been featured on commercials, won grants, and done several interviews in magazines. One thing that’s very important to me is making sure my legacy knows what it means to work hard and to be a creative. I believe in this wholeheartedly. Junk Starz isn’t done yet either. We’d like to expand one day soon. Hopefully, this expansion includes a reality show too.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Well, the road hasn’t been as smooth as butter, but it’s been a journey that I wouldn’t trade. The experience only makes you better if you stay the course. Some of those bumps and bruises have been truck repairs costing more than a used car lol. I had to learn to be excited about a $500 bill. Aside from that and maintaining enough work to keep your employees taken care of I’ve enjoyed every bit. Oh yeah doing this in Michigan where we get in climate weather I had to adjust from the phone ringing off the hook to it slowing down a bit in the winter. That was a strong mental war to overcome. Learned to do it, though, and were still here.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
We specialize in Junk Removal, Dumpster Rental, and Demolition. If you consider it Junk and you no longer have a need for it, let us come and get it gone for you. We work with residential as well as commercial. We are hands-on and a full-service Junk Removal company. We also recycle up to 60% of the items we remove. That’s something were really proud of. Something that sets us apart is how fitting the name of the company is as it relates to our employees. All of our employees are starz in their own right. Some are aspiring artist, actors, writers, etc. but hey they have to make a living until the star in them affords them to make a living off of their craft. I’m all about it!

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the water. I am a water guy totally. I also love what we’re known for here! Cars and Music. The weather is my least favorite thing about the city. As a man who grew up playing hockey for 20yrs, I am no longer a fan of the cold weather.
