Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Bedell.
Hi Stephanie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello, my name is Stephanie, aka “Thebagladie” and I am a Wardrobe Consultant here in the city of Detroit. I specialize in plus-size fashion, as well as thrifted (sustainable) fashion. I began styling professionally about 7 years ago. I’ve worked in fashion retail for 12+ years. My last position was as a Visual Manager at a popular chain store. I began thrifting after college when my funds were low and there were no more grants or student loans to fall back on. From there my passion for thrifting was born.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Working for others never panned out, so entrepreneurship was my only way out. I’ve been working solely for myself for almost 3 years now. When I made more money after work in 2 hours than a 12-hr. shift, I knew it was time to go.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m know for creating one-of-a-kind, unique looks. I’ve been told my looks remind individuals of New York high fashion. I specialize in thrifted and plus-size fashion. I’m most proud of my annual thrifted fashion show entitled “Rags $2 Riches. The name was derived from the Salvation Army’s weekend 5/$5 Sale. I would create looks for ONLY $2. 2022 will be my 4th production. What sets me apart from others is that I don’t tend to follow trends. I’m humble and not boastful. Prior to producing my first show, I had never even attended a fashion show before. All I knew was that I loved fashion and it was the driving force.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memories are celebrating Christmas at my local shelter. Spending time with extended family and giving back is one of my fondest memories as a child. I’ve never been one to put much emphasis on gifts, even as a child. Time spent is the best gift anyone can give.
