Daily Inspiration: Meet Sonic Smut

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonic Smut.

Hi Sonic, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
We are a three piece from Detroit, guitar (Mike Latcha Comin’ Atcha), drums (David Cwik), and organ/synth (Alice Sun). Alicesun and I [Mike} met in music school, we were both in and out of different bands in the scene until sometime around 2021 we re-connected and started writing music together. Something clicked. We decided that even though we really wanted a drummer we would play as a duo until the right one came along. It was literally our first show as a two piece that Dave walked up and said what we already knew, that we would sound better with drums, and also mentioned something that led me [Alice] to ask “what instrument do you play” he replied “drums’, it was so perfectly funny that I already knew without hearing him he had something special. We tried him out and it was instant chemistry, he was it, band complete.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It is a hard road to be an original band. We don’t chase trends and we do things how we want to. I guess sometimes that can make people uncomfortable and not know what to do with us, but we have had incredible support from our Detroit music community that keeps us pushing. We have to be honest with our work or it just doesn’t feel right.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a freaky psychedelic garage rock band from Detroit MI. We released our self titled debut album May 2024, and we are preparing for two separate releases in 2025. We like to explore the boundaries of what we think music can be for us. Our sound is a blender channeling notes of Deep Purple, Funkadelic and beyond.
