Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Brazier
Hi Shelby, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In late 2020, I had an 8 month old and an almost 3 year old and was craving a creative escape to ease my mind from PPA/PPD and anxiety around the world shifting due to covid. It started off with me scrolling social media endlessly during another 2am feed that would ultimately end in me running a 6 figure business with over 17,000 sales four years later! During covid I was a teacher and I had children in daycare, both of which were unstable due to many quarantines. Due to the unstable childcare, I was having to miss work a lot and ended up with many unpaid sick days and also many mandatory paid childcare days even though quarantines forced us to be absent. I needed to make supplemental income to help aid the financial strain.
I started selling earrings in November 2020, bought my first 3d Printer with Christmas money I was gifted from my Grandma (love you!) and from there I continued to learn and grow in my craft. I knew that the business name would reflect my love for my two daughters, Avery and Maylee. This is where the name Maverly Designs was born. Each night after bedtime, I would sneak away and play with Polymer Clay until I was almost asleep at my desk, but I was so excited to learn and it ultimately became my calming creative therapy. I would do monthly launches or tools and earrings. I collaborated with other makers and hosted giveaways to provide tools to makers all over the world! I found a niche community of clay creators who all felt the calming desire to continue to create, and I was happy to be apart of their journey. I learned how to 3D model on a program called Fusion 360 and began designing shapes and tools for other polymer clay artists. From Etsy to Shopify, I built my online eCommerce website with over 500 products and growing!
I am now lucky enough to say that this little 2am dream became my reality after much joy and hard work, and many late sleepless nights that turned into full classroom days to follow! I wouldn’t change it for the world.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
If I had to conceptualize the path from the start to now, it would be anything but smooth. But it has been beautiful and challenging nevertheless. I was teaching full time during 2020-2021 which was interesting during COVID, and on top of that, I was running a side hustle from the hours of 9pm-12am+ at times.
But nothing worth getting ever comes easy. And the ability to take each challenge and use it as effective change in my business rather than baggage to carry along is the key mindset that makes a successful entrepreneur.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I had draw and design Polymer Clay shapes into 3D printed Clay Cutters for other small businesses to use in their creative clay businesses.
I am proud of myself for diving into a technological world that I knew nothing about and continue to learn, grow and adapt to new innovative ideas.
What sets me apart from others is that I never allowed something to be my excuse for not achieving it. If I wanted to do something, I took the time to make it happen! Even if it took me sleepless nights to learn it, I was all in!
What’s next?
My future plan is to expand on social media, expand on in person events and markets, and to continue to adapt to my niche customers. I also want to bring new items to my store that will continue to inspire other small businesses and also myself!
