Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawna Mott
Hi Shawna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Soon after my youngest was about to start preschool, I felt a burst of inspiration to decorate beyond the confines of my own home—after all, I could only redecorate the same rooms so many times! I decided to take the plunge into the world of interior decorating and design. I started small, painting murals at the church I was attending at the time. Word quickly spread, and before I knew it, I was decorating rooms for friends and their friends. This blossomed into a fantastic work-from-home opportunity that allowed me to be a stay-at-home mom while tapping into my creative side, designing home interiors through my unique upcycling process. It was the perfect blend of family and passion!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Thankfully, my husband owns a home building company, so I always had a treasure trove of leftover supplies to create home decor with ease. But it hasn’t been all smooth sailing. Getting visibility for my work, extending my reach beyond Traverse City, and showcasing the quality of my inventory through online images without a public storefront have been some of my biggest challenges. Right now, shoppers can book a private shopping experience in my home, which is pretty special! I’m currently seeking local partners to showcase my products in their stores and working on expanding my virtual sales and shipping options. The journey is exciting, and I’m thrilled to keep growing and sharing my passion with more people!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m known for turning trash into treasure, breathing new life into vintage items that most people would throw away. My specialty is finding unique uses for nature’s gifts, creating one-of-a-kind decor like sailboats, wall art, holiday decorations, and more! I love embracing the theme of our beautiful Great Lakes, bringing a touch of nautical and coastal charm into your home. What sets me apart is my ability to see the potential in discarded items, transforming them into something beautiful and purposeful. That’s how I came up with the name Sooo Creative Designs Decor—people always tell me I’m so creative!
What matters most to you?
I absolutely love seeing the joy on my customers’ faces as their homes come to life with my creations. It’s even more rewarding when they’re surprised or amazed by the history of the item they’ve purchased. Creating one-of-a-kind pieces from my own home and workshop while being a stay-at-home mom is truly priceless. The flexibility it offers lets me blend my passion with my family life perfectly.
