Daily Inspiration: Meet Sarah Schock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Schock.

Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Making candles started as a hobby. My (now) husband is a beekeeper, so I had access to wax from a trustworthy source. I loved the idea that hives from our own property could make the wax in my own candles. Plus, I wasn’t finding the candles I wanted in stores, and was often bothered by the strong fragrances, so I decided to try making them!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Goodness no! This has been a decade of trial and (fiery) error. I have made candles too tall, too wide, and with all sorts of wicks. I have tested naturally scented options like lavender that became too highly flammable. Even as I’ve settled into my now standard products I find myself tinkering with new ideas. Learning more and more about beeswax, and in turn educating my customers, is a never ending process I’ve learned to embrace.

But even with all the challenges of product testing, I think the most challenging aspect is showing the public just how different beeswax is, how it naturally purifies the air instead of polluting it, how it smells like warm honey when it’s burning but is almost scent less in solid form, or how it burns 2-3 times longer than most other wax options!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My main professional focus is The Keeper’s Candle and beeswax products, honey products come in a close second. I balance these two bee byproducts while also being a full time SAHM. I assist my husband, widely known as “the bee guy” who mainly operates commercial pollination for northern Michigan cherries. I am so proud that the products we process, create and sell come directly from the honeybees we care for ourselves. Purchasing from us means supporting people who care for the honeybees above all else.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Learning to ski at the Homestead, getting sour gummy worms at the Dam Candy Store, and tipping canoes with my grandparents in the Crystal River are probably my top 3 childhood highlights.
