Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Tomeo Aybar
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Embarking on this creative journey as a high schooler navigating her career path, Sara Annela Studio came to fruition in 2009 fueled by a passion for art and a strong ambition to build a business around it. Understanding that graphic design seamlessly blends artistic expression with strategic problem-solving for businesses, the decision was clear. Even before starting college, I took on projects like painting local business names and logos on buildings. Inspired by my father, whose entrepreneurial spirit transcended traditional work hours, I embarked on a journey to establish my mark in the design world.
What sets me apart in this vibrant landscape of creativity? It’s my commitment to infuse every project with a distinct touch—a touch that transcends mere graphic design and ventures into the realm of storytelling. Whether crafting a boutique logo for a quaint “mom-and-pop shop” or orchestrating a sleek corporate marketing masterpiece for a Fortune 500 company, my approach remains anchored in authenticity and client-centricity.
Armed with a sharp focus in marketing, I firmly believe that successful outcomes stem from fostering a partnership where client and designer are truly on the same team. It’s not just about delivering projects; it’s about championing their goals and aspirations as if they were my own. This ethos underscores everything I do.
At the heart of my practice lie values that guide me: honesty, transparent communication, humility, and integrity. I immerse myself in their world, treating their challenges and triumphs as mine, and translating that empathy into visually compelling designs. This isn’t merely a job; it’s a vocation to connect ideas, evoke emotions, and ultimately, make a meaningful impact across many industries.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not! My journey has been far from smooth. I’ve navigated multiple freelance jobs while working 9-to-5 roles, grappled with self-confidence in this exceptionally talented and competitive market, and continually strive to balance administrative duties with creative work. All while not getting burnt out and still enjoy my family and hobbies. Moving from rural Michigan to big city Chicago was a transition that took time, but ultimately my heart still yearned for home—especially being locked up during the pandemic. Despite these challenges, every step has been a valuable learning experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything.
One of the greatest struggles has been learning to trust my instincts, especially when encountering clients who may not fully appreciate the value of my time or the scope of my work. It’s often difficult but necessary to respectfully decline partnerships that don’t align with my values or expectations. Ultimately, understanding that no amount of compensation is worth compromising my integrity or working with challenging individuals has been a crucial lesson.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a Graphic Designer, Creative Director, and Artist specializing in print and digital marketing, I bring a proactive approach to life. I am known for my optimistic outlook, always striving to find the silver lining in every challenge.
I am especially proud of my recent achievement as one of the contest winners for 2024, chosen from a global pool of candidates to inspire the USA Kloth and Nuss athletic uniforms for the Paris 2024 Olympic beach volleyball competition. Despite lacking prior experience in clothing design, my profound admiration for Kloth and Nuss, their partnership, and my active involvement in volleyball motivated me to pursue this remarkable opportunity. Now, seeing them aim for gold in the red suit would truly be the cherry on top of the Eiffel Tower cake!
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Persistence, remaining ego-free, and continuously learn how to enhance your craft.
