Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Moore.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Sara Moore and I am the owner/creator of Wander West Michigan. My background is in Marketing/Communications, a field in which I worked for 10 years before creating WWM. WWM was born out of the pandemic, I was home with my two kiddos and needed something to spend my creative time on. I thought this was the perfect opportunity to start the website and creative business that I had always wanted! The West Michigan area has always held my heart and I love sharing all the fun things to do in the area!
At Wander West Michigan, our mission is to shine a light on the wonderful West Michigan area and all that it has to offer. With an emphasis on locally owned businesses and Michigan-made products, our focus and efforts are to inform visitors and locals of all the top attractions, places to eat, accommodations, places to shop, and more in the West Michigan area.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road so far has been pretty smooth (although I am less than 2 years in). We have had positive feedback from readers and followers on social. Everyone seems to be enjoying the content WWM has been creating so far!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As I mentioned my background is in Communications/Marketing. I got my BS from GVSU in 2012 and got my first job out of college at FireKeepers Casino Hotel in Battle Creek. I started out in their banquet department as a supervisor (I had worked hospitality all through college and this was my foot in the door). Less than a year later, I was accepted into their management training program which lasted 2 years with in-depth training in each department within the organization. From there, I landed in the marketing department in which I handled Public Relations for 2 years.
After the casino, I moved to the tribal operations side. FireKeepers Casino Hotel is owned and operated by the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi, of which I am also a member. I stayed at the tribe for roughly 4 years as their Communications Manager. In this position, I oversaw the day-t0-day operations of the department including web design, photography, writing/editing, public relations, social media, and more. This really laid the groundwork for me to have the skills and knowledge base for me to start my own company.
Over the years became known as the “organized’ one. I was always planning and making spreadsheets for projects at work and personal items as well. I liked to plan out my travel schedule weeks, months, and even years in advance. I started to be the go-to person if someone wanted to know what was going on in the area over the weekend.
Co-workers and friends started asking me to help plan their vacation or summer plans in West Michigan. It started to happen so often that I finally started to think that I should be doing this for a living! 🙂
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I love collaborating with other content creators, local makers, photographers, anything really! People can reach me through the website Work with Us page. There is a section to fill out your info and that goes right to my inbox.
