Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob Hasting.
Hi Rob, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have spent more than 25 years in the financial industry, building a career at the intersection of public companies and the global investment community. I am a Partner and co-owner of Schaeffner, Miller, Hasting, Connelly & Co. (SMHC), a firm that organizes meetings, conferences, and investor events connecting stock research teams with institutional portfolio managers, hedge funds, and investors around the world. My firm helps facilitate the exchange of ideas and research between companies and Wall Street. We have offices in Michigan, Denver, San Antonio, and Perth, Australia.
But in 2024, I started a second company born not from finance—but from family.
During the COVID pandemic, My father was diagnosed with dementia. With travel largely halted during that time, I found himself with something I rarely had in my Wall Street career: time. That time allowed me to spend more days with my dad and I quickly noticed that everyday tasks around the home were becoming increasingly difficult for him.
Simple things—turning a faucet, opening a door, or stepping into the shower—had quietly become obstacles.
I began making small improvements around the house: installing grab bars, replacing traditional doorknobs and faucet handles with levers, and adding a handheld showerhead. Those relatively simple changes made a profound difference. They allowed my dad to remain safe, comfortable, and independent in the home he loved.
That experience became my inspiration for RMH Services, a Birmingham-based home improvement company focused on helping homeowners maintain and improve their homes—particularly families supporting loved ones who want to “age in place.” At least that was my mission when I started.
In many ways, the business also represents a return to my youth. Growing up, I spent countless hours working alongside his dad on remodeling and landscaping projects. My father even encouraged me to study Construction Management at Michigan State University. Although I ultimately built my professional career in finance, those early lessons in craftsmanship, problem-solving, and pride in doing things the right way made a huge impact and never left me.
Today, RMH Services has grown into a full-service handyman, home repair, and landscape company serving homeowners who value reliability, quality workmanship, and attention to detail. We do projects of all sizes. What began as a way to help my own dad has evolved into a broader mission: helping other families make improvements that allow people to live safely, comfortably, and confidently in their homes.
I also get a lot of support from my family. I live in Birmingham, Michigan with my partner Cassie and am proud father of three daughters.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. For more than two decades my primary career has been with SMHC., which is a fast-paced business with a very demanding travel schedule. For years that meant traveling to New York multiple times each month, along with regular trips to London, Boston, and the West Coast to organize meetings and conferences with investors and hedge funds.
Starting a second company while continuing to run that business created a real balancing act. The two industries are very different—finance is built around research, meetings, and global relationships, while a home improvement company is far more localized, operational and hands-on. Building systems, managing projects, and establishing a reputation in the community while maintaining the standards of my other business required a lot of discipline and learning along the way.
On a more personal level, the most difficult part was watching my father’s health decline after his dementia diagnosis. That experience was incredibly challenging for our family, but it was also the catalyst for starting RMH Services. What began as helping my own father making my parents home safer ultimately became the inspiration for a company focused on helping other families facing the same situation.
Like most entrepreneurial journeys, the challenges were part of the process—but they also helped define the mission and purpose behind the business.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I lead two very different businesses, each focused on service and results. In finance, as a Partner and co-owner of SMHC, I specialize in connecting unique research firms with portfolio managers. I’m known for building strong relationships with hedge funds who are notoriously difficult to meet. I need to make sure that we are consistently delivering insights that help these investors make informed decisions. Trust, reliability, and discretion are at the heart of what I do.
In home improvement, with RMH Services, I run a full-service handyman, home repair, and landscaping company . What sets us apart is our unwavering commitment to quality, reliability, and professionalism. We’re proud to have earned excellent client reviews, repeat business, and constant referrals—testament to the trust we build with every homeowner we serve.
Across both businesses, what I’m most proud of is the ability to deliver results that people can count on, whether it’s providing critical market insights or taking care of someone’s home with care, precision, and integrity. With both businesses I strive to create and maintain long lasting relationships.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that trust and relationships are everything. Whether connecting with hedge fund managers in finance or serving homeowners through RMH Services, success comes from reliability, integrity, and following through. Managing two very different businesses and navigating personal challenges along the way reinforced that it’s not just what you do—but how you do it—that matters. Consistently putting people first, delivering results, and earning their confidence has been the foundation for everything I’ve built.
