Today we’d like to introduce you to Ramana Roberson.
Hi Ramana , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my career many years ago in the field of accounting. It wasn’t until one of my children was diagnosed with a learning disability that I decided to return to college to pursue a degree in social work. With this degree and the experience I gained as a volunteer for numerous nonprofits while in college, I have been able to serve in positions that has allowed me to serve many children and families. It is where my heart is.
I also started my own life coaching (Sister-Girlfriend Life Coaching) and a for profit business (Nana’s Be Hive) that focuses on empowering women through financial freedom. In addition to my own ventures, I am contracted as the Executive Director of Child’s Hope: The Child Abuse Prevention Council Out-Wayne County. For 40 years, Child’s Hope has educated and trained groups and individuals using tools for prevention. We also respond to the current needs of families that are based on surveys and other local data, such as basic needs distributions, laundry days, etc. As of the summer of 2025, Child’s Hope has expanded its efforts to include all of Wayne and Washtenaw Counties. Since my tenure in 2019, Child’s Hope has served more than 800 families.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My career journey has had its ups and downs for various reasons. I have experienced budget cuts, falling short of fundraising goals, lack of support from decision makers due to misinformation, internal department strife/conflict, a decline in volunteering, and barriers to needy families due to mistrust. Every struggle caused delays and temporary setbacks, so we had to pivot to meet our goals.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Deciding to change my career 20 years ago was the best decision I made, because helping others was engrained in my heart. I watched my Nana and mother do it. As an adult, I found myself temporarily opening my door to homeless friends, feeding the hungry, and purchasing needs for both family and friends.
I have a strong belief that everyone has a right to be great. We were all given gifts, but unfortunately many had a rough start and never had the opportunity to discover their God-given talents. Every talent has the potential to bring wealth, and that is what I do in all of my work. I refuse to allow those close to me give up, and I do everything within my power to help others work towards greatness.
I do have a special place in my heart for women and children. Women are naturally nurturers and have often been taken advantage of because of our automatic need to care for or fix; and children didn’t ask to be here. So, the work that I do day-to-day is to bring aid to the most vulnerable and underserved. I especially love the prevention work because we have enough data that tells us what events are likely to happen in certain situations, and we can therefore prevent harm from even happening to the vulnerable.
I am my brothers’/sisters’ keeper. Many people can’t stand on that. They become frustrated and give up on people because it can understandably be a lot. With every difficult person comes a story. I make it my business to not be so quick at retaliate to unwelcomed behavior. I used the acronym Pay Attention to Unspoken Sign and Edit (your response accordingly) – PAUSE. Those who know me, trust me. I genuinely want to help those in need.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I love to learn, and it has been through those learning opportunities that I have been able to connect with professionals that I can and have learned from. Searching for these opportunities should be ongoing. You learn so much and can meet people that can benefit you for a season or a lifetime.
