Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillip-Michael Scales.
Hi Phillip-Michael, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I was super young, I was in the children’s choir for Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat with Donny Osmond. So that was my first exposure to performing, and it was in front of 5000 people! My aunt also was close friends with BB King, he called me his nephew, and I called him my uncle. I hit a point when learning guitar where I realized that I wasn’t going to get anywhere close to that soloing and style, and my friends were interested in the Beatles and Songwriting. I went that route. I went to Berklee College of Music and then fronted my own indie bands. My uncle and I got closer, and then when he passed away, I started incorporating a little more blues into what I do. It’s a style I call Dive Bar Soul.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never a smooth road when you do it yourself. I came up in a strange time of music before Spotify, Instagram, and Youtube were the staples of the industry. It was a bit of an ice age; I’ve also done so much of the business myself that I learned through trial and error. I believe rough seas make better sailors, and I wouldn’t trade it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I play guitar, write songs, sing, and perform them. I’m for sure proud of my success because it’s been hard won, and I did so much of the business myself that I feel like I know my industry and business inside out.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I think I learned to slow down and be grateful. It’s easy to feel behind in an instantaneous world, but I really do believe that the quality of work will prevail.
