Today we’d like to introduce you to Peggy Hawley.
Hi Peggy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I attended high school in Chicago and was fortunate to have a great art teacher and a unique high school “art major”. She encouraged me to attend the University of Illinois and study art. Of course, I didn’t listen and went to a small liberal arts college.
I ended up majoring in English and teaching high school English for 4 years.
Eventually, I went back to school to make up undergrad art classes and earn an MFA in painting at American University. Once again, with encouragement from another art teacher.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I took one night class and then two night classes. I taught art at a small private school part time. It was a juggling act with two small children, but fortunately my husband was always supportive.
It only took 10 years!!! before I finally did what that high school art teacher told me to do.
It took awhile and was not a smooth road, but in the end I am grateful that was the rocky road I chose.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an oil painter of landscapes, still life, interiors and boats.
I have taught classes at a nearby summer resort focusing on interiors. I feel I have passed on the important fundamentals of painting while sharing my passion for a Michigan treasure. I am proud to have had that opportunity.
Also, when someone who has purchased a painting tells me how important it is to them, I am grateful for those 10 years of study!
I have developed connections with people through my art.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
My city is Frankfort.
It is not hard to like the proximity to Lake Michigan, the friendly and supportive people.
