Today we’d like to introduce you to Noor Al-Omari.
Hi Noor, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been working as a licensed social worker for about 3 years now. The field of mental health has always inspired me because of my grandmother, who was the first Arab American Psychologist in Michigan. When I first graduated from Wayne State University in 2020, I had no idea what I wanted, but I knew that I wanted to help those in need. Noticing the lack of available mental health services was disheartening to me – and that’s when I started Lumen Therapeutic Services. At 25 years old, that feeling of imposter syndrome crept up, but I knew I was meant to be here and help individuals struggling with mental health issues. I named my business Lumen because my name, Noor, means “light” in Arabic, and I believe in guiding those to find the light within!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road while working on my business. There were some challenges along the way, such as the long and taxing process of creating an LLC and becoming credentialed with insurances. It has also been surprisingly challenging to help raise awareness on topics such as mental health due to the stigma surrounding it.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Licensed Master’s Social Worker who works as a Psychotherapist in a general practice setting. I aim to create a space where one are able to share their story and talk through different ways to help alleviate issues, stress, triggers, fears, and insecurities and work through them collaboratively. I feel that it is important for both the patient and the therapist to build a healthy therapeutic relationship. I have experience working with individuals with mental health issues and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. I specialize in working with individuals and couples that struggle with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and trauma. It all begins with trust. I believe that creating a supportive, judgment-free environment is key in developing a positive therapeutic relationship. I am most proud of my accomplishments with my patients, where they have healed and grown to live a very fulfilling life.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was described as inquisitive and always eager to learn. I was raised with three brothers, so I was quite the tomboy. I was always interested in sports and other outdoor activities. I was always an extroverted, ambitious, and good-natured child. As I grew older, I became more creative and interested in helping others.
