Daily Inspiration: Meet Niya Stone

Today we’d like to introduce you to Niya Stone

Hi Niya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve loved all things beauty since I was a little girl—hair, nails, makeup, and lashes. During my second year of high school, affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, I started doing my own hair to avoid salon visits. My first attempt was box braids—they were not perfect, but my mom encouraged me, and I kept improving!

I soon launched my Instagram page, Niya The Stylist, to showcase my work and find people willing to let me practice. Despite my lack of confidence in my work, I kept taking model clients at home to improve. When I discovered my school’s cosmetology program in my 3rd year in high school, I knew I had to join. Over two years, I learned, practiced on peers, and studied for my state board exam, determined to get licensed by just 18 years old.

While in school, I continued taking clients, gaining hands-on experience in business, professionalism, and discipline. After graduating, I passed my state board exam and became a licensed cosmetologist. Knowing college wasn’t for me, I got a job, invested in my home salon, and promoted myself on social media. Though my clientele grew slowly, I was grateful to practice a career doing what I truly love.

Through relentless promotion, investment, and continuous learning, I found my niche, built a steady clientele in my home salon, and cultivated a community of beauty lovers across social media.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey in the beauty industry hasn’t been easy, but it has been extremely rewarding. I’ve faced countless challenges—building a clientele from the ground up, struggling to be seen in a heavily saturated market, and questioning whether I could ever make enough money to sustain the lifestyle I pictured for myself. There were moments of self-doubt, times when bookings were slow, and days when I felt like my hard work wasn’t paying off.

I struggled with the pressure to be in a salon or suite, often feeling like others were advancing faster—booking more clients, gaining more attention on social media, and securing their own spaces. It was hard not to compare my journey to theirs, but I had to remind myself that success is a journey, not a race.

Running a business takes patience, consistency, and discipline. The key is to trust in your own journey, and understand that what is for you cannot be taken away from you! Your success will come at the right time.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I cater to Black women who love long braids, weaves, and extensions while prioritizing the health of their natural hair. My specialty is protective quick weaves—a low-maintenance style that keeps natural hair moisturized and growing while offering length and volume. My signature versatile quick weaves allow my clients to switch parts, wear their hair up or down, and enjoy a seamless, convenient install.

What sets my brand apart is my commitment to redefining the reputation of Detroit’s home-based stylists. While many are seen as unprofessional, I focus on creating an exceptional client experience. I decorate my home salon for the holidays, provide snacks and treats, personally greet clients at the door, and cultivate an inviting atmosphere. Whether working from home or in a high-end salon, success is about the experience you create—and I strive to make all of my clients feel special.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice to anyone starting in the beauty industry is to remember that everyone starts somewhere. You won’t be perfect or fully booked overnight, and that’s okay. Focus on perfecting your craft before heavily marketing yourself—clients are more likely to trust and book with you if you already provide quality services.

No one’s journey is easy, but the key is to have faith and stay confident. In this industry, you are your biggest supporter. Be unique, set yourself apart, and the right clients will come to you. Success isn’t just about skill—it’s about believing in yourself and creating a brand that speaks for itself.
