Daily Inspiration: Meet New Troy

Today we’d like to introduce you to New Troy.

Hi New Troy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We’re a band made up of four cousins: Max and Sam Carlson, who grew up in eastern Florida, and Aidan and Rowan Kile, who were raised in Buchanan, Michigan. Every summer, Max and Sam would fly north to Michigan, where our families hosted an annual “Battle of the Bands.” After years of playing at these festivities, the four cousins decided to move to Grand Rapids and pursue a career in music. Now, we all live in a house together where we create music and try to play out as much as possible around town and wherever we can.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not exactly. Max and Sam had to uproot their entire lives to start this band. They moved 1000 miles across the country, leaving all of their friends and loved ones behind in Florida. Rowan left his friends in Lansing when he transferred from MSU to Grand Valley to pursue the dream, and Aidan spent the first 6 months of the band formation commuting from Lansing to Grand Rapids to play shows and open mic nights.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Well typically we will start off a song idea with one of the four of us coming up with a melody, whether that be guitar, bass, or even drums sometimes. From there we just freestyle jam on top of it until we decide on what the structure is gonna look like, and then Aidan and/or Max will come up with lyrics for it.
I would say we are most proud of our chemistry during live shows, or jamming in the basement. We work seamlessly together in that sense and have become very good at communicating non-verbally while playing. Its very euphoric and almost spiritual to feel ideas flow with each other and watch a song or an improv jam be born from nothing.
Not many other bands consist of four extremely driven and creatively passionate individuals who are also blood related. We’ve known each other since birth and we built a solid foundation of chemistry and understanding long before we ever picked up instruments.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
We believe it is our purpose to provide deep grooves, epic head bangs, and sonic transcendence to common folks who might need to let loose or turn their frown upside down after a tough day 🙂

Come see us play at The Pyramid Scheme on August 29th! No better way to start off a long weekend than to be jamming out.
