Daily Inspiration: Meet Morgan Sanford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Sanford

Hi Morgan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So, when everything shut down, like a lot of folks, I found myself with more free time than I knew what to do with. I began streaming and one day, I decided to paint on stream. It was a bit nerve-wracking at first. I wasn’t a professional, and I didn’t know what I was doing. But I laughed, I painted, and after a few other painting streams, I found myself really enjoying this new hobby. As days turned into weeks, painting became more than just a fun activity; it ignited a passion inside me that I never knew was there. I spent hours experimenting with colors on canvas. I spent hours drawing things with pen and paper. I started to receive messages from viewers who were inspired to make art themselves, which felt amazing! Eventually, my little hobby turned into something much bigger. I started taking commissions and selling my art online. It got to a point where I had to make a decision: stick with my desk job or jump into this new world of art full-time. After a lot of consideration, maybe some late-night soul-searching, I quit my job to pursue painting wholeheartedly. I can’t express how liberating it’s been. Plus, the community I’ve built around my art is just incredible. If you’re considering trying something new, I totally encourage you to go for it! You never know where it might lead.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s not a journey without the bumps in the road, that’s for sure. There have been obstacles. Some smaller, some bigger. Every artist faces insecurities about their work, and making a living off art is proving to be tricky! Learning how to manage my time well and getting a good work flow without burning myself out took a ton of time, trial, and error. And many times, I’ve needed to rely on my stream and other income to keep it funded. This is the year I hope to turn over a new leaf!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Most of my artworks are in acrylic paintings, but I’ve spent a great deal of time drawing with pencils, and I like to use oil pastels from time to time, too. I am greatly inspired by pop-art, and impressionist and surrealist visuals, as well as the music I listen to. Out of everything I have made, I am most proud of my Retrowave style paintings. Black can be such a difficult color to work with, but I think it works incredibly well with this technicolor art style of mine.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
There are many things I wish I had known from the get-go. The truth is that it’s a bit of a journey for most of us, and it’s an impossible task to know absolutely everything from the start. Everything good takes time to create. I think my biggest piece of advice for people who want to go pro is to understand your audience and collectors, find a good work flow, manage your time well, and make some darn goals! I cannot stress that last part enough. It is so important to make goals for yourself every week, no matter what it is you do.
