MC David J

Hi MC, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I now resides in Atlanta, Georgia, but I spent my formative years traveling all over the United States. Due to these travels, I was introduced to many different people, all of whom would have unique stories to tell. It was through these interactions that I found my profound love for music, namely Jazz, which would be the foundation in making me into the artist I am today. At the age of 7, my passion was then intensified when I started to learn to play instruments such as the piano, guitar, trumpet, and the drum machine, making me a multi-talented musician. My first exposure to Hip Hop was when I watched my father break dancing to artists such as Melle Mel, Sugar Hill Gang, and Run DMC. This would be the spark for me at only 10 years old to start writing my first rhymes. When I discovered artists such as Dr. Dre, The Roots, The Notorious B.I.G, Eazy-E, and Slick Rick, this would only add more fuel to the fire burning inside of me. Not only helping my lyrical ability but furthering my progression with producing all of my own music. From the age of 16, I began making my very own home studio after receiving my first drum machine from my grandfather, then adding recording software, electric keyboards, and a microphone to the collection. All of these experiences are still ever-present in my music as has truly encapsulated the sound of old school Hip Hop. Almost as if you have just discovered unreleased music from that era. In 2015, I released two studio albums, ‘The Chill’ and ‘No Chill’, after which I founded my own record label CoCalm Entertainment, whose roster expands to more than purely Hip Hop. I continue to make original and essential music and will carry on turning my experiences into true Hip Hop.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been easy, and I’m still striving for success. People will lie to you. Know where and when to spend your money. Never let the money get out of control. Countless stories on spending money in the wrong places and biting myself for it later. One time spent $5k in hopes to achieve something next level but did not get the return expected. Score everything in writing. Have a backup plan. Shoot for the stars, but keep safe always.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I LOVE Hip Hop. To be a rapper is to be the cream of the crop in my opinion. You mean to tell me in this day and age, being a young African American and free, I can say whatever I want on the microphone and get away with it? I’m exercising my freedom of speech to the absolute max! I was stolen from my homeland. I don’t know my native earth. By nature, I have come to dominate English, which is not supposed to be my language by nature. And to bend and break this language in every way possible through Hip Hop is beautiful to me. I am a musician as well. I produce beats play trumpet and guitar!

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Back in my middle school and high school days, I was in love with the concept of making albums. I would record songs in my bedroom and rip the playlist to a blank CD. Then I would write my name and album title on the disc, package it in a jewel case, print off black & white copies of the album cover (because I stole all the color print in my dad’s printer), and distributed all of about 300 copies of the album throughout my school like a boss. The way I made the money to buy all the cases and extra printing was by mowing lawns throughout my neighborhood. I was always on the grind. Alot of kids loved it. Some did not care. Some would leave the album ripped apart and thrown on the ground next to a garbage can. I would just walk by, pick it up and redistribute it. Built my character.
