Daily Inspiration: Meet Lulu Fall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lulu Fall.

Hi Lulu, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a first-generational African American woman from Washington, DC. I knew I had an affinity for the arts, and my lovely parents saw how insanely dramatic I was, so they threw me into all sorts of arts after school community programs. I swear, that is the ember that sparked my entire career: I attended Duke Ellington School of the Arts in DC; studied jazz music at Michigan State University; worked the theatre/music circuit in DC post graduation. My hard work led me to book a national tour of a musical, perform on and off Broadway stages several times, and do a ton of regional musical theatre work. I also have a discography of 6 albums, which can collectively be found on Apple Music, Spotify, and Bandcamp.

Right before the pandemic hit, I relocated from New York to Detroit to close the gap on a long-distance relationship. The global pandemic shifted so many things for me – namely my life’s purpose and my need to transform from the inside out. I started to deepen my inner-strength and resilience against the backdrop of global uncertainty and collective pain. This directly led to my abstract painting journey which, 5 years later, has led to many prestigious group (and solo) exhibitions in metro Detroit as well as commissions for art buyers.

My journey into self-rediscovery also lead me to teaching part time as a lecturer and vocal coach at Oakland University’s School of Music, Theatre and Dance. I am also the new executive director of Cabaret 313, a performing arts non profit based in Detroit. I officially started my private vocal lesson studio – Lulu Fall Vocal Studio, in 2018, and launched my Etsy Shop – Lulu Fall Abstracts, in 2021.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing in life is smooth, and I am learning that there is so much beauty in the struggle! It’s all about your mindset approach. My biggest struggle has been around confidence, which always shocks people! Although I am a professional singer and actor and love being on stage and screen, I have struggled with my confidence most of my life. Remember when I said that the pandemic made me transform from the inside out? The basis of that transformation was to get clear on the root of my wayward confidence. I am dedicating the rest of my life to gently peel back those layers, as struggles are never linear! The more I peel back those layers, the more I realize that I am a well of power and talents.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What I do: Singer, songwriter, actor, abstract painter, educator, arts administration

What I’m known for / specialize in: As an actor, I specialize in contemporary musical theatre – you may have seen me in the Broadway shows: “Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812”, “HAIR”, the one-night-only event “Skittles, the Musical” (featuring Michael C. Hall).. As a singer and songwriter, I specialize in music rooted in jazz and world-groove, laden with tones of soul, electronic and rock elements. When I create, I do so with pure honestly, love and vulnerability. As a visual artist, I am known for my colorful pieces of art. The colors dance on the canvas, in an almost watercolor-like way, even though I use acrylic paint. My pieces are very distinct, showing depth and movement.

What I’m most proud of: I am proud of my resiliency. This industry is one of THE most challenging ones out there. It is easy to lose yourself, give up, and give in. My strong anchor (and support system) is what has gotten me into the rooms, spaces stages that I have graced. And I am not done, I have so much more to create and offer.

What sets me apart from others: I have a unique vocal instrument. It is incredibly distinctive, and I have been blessed with an instrument that will pull you in and envelop you. My visual art also has that same channelling capability to pull you in through the colors and depth that live in my pieces. I’ve been told these things time and time again, and it is the most heartfelt compliment ever!
