Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurissa Myers.
Hi Laurissa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When I was a little girl, my favorite thing to do was take pictures. My gear back then was much simpler: a little blue film point-and-shoot camera. My subjects were a little different back then as well, usually my pets or my younger siblings (whom I would convince to pose for me). Little did I know those moments would eventually lead to something much bigger: helping others preserve some of the most meaningful memories of their lives.
Growing up, whenever someone asked what I wanted to be, my answer was always the same: a photographer. But after graduating high school, I set that dream aside and took a different path through college. I never stopped taking pictures, but I was always too afraid to leap into professional photography. I doubted myself and wondered if I could turn my passion into a career.
A few years ago, I found myself constantly talking about how much I wished I would start my business. With a lot of encouragement from my husband, I finally purchased my first professional-grade camera and began practicing every chance I got. It took about a year before I officially launched my business, but once I did, I never looked back.
I actually got my professional start in wedding photography. My very first true session was a small family wedding, and shortly afterward, a good friend invited me to second shoot a wedding with her as well. I was incredibly nervous, but from the moment the day began, I loved every second of it. Watching two people celebrate one of the biggest days of their lives while knowing I was preserving those memories for them was something I had never experienced before. In that moment, I knew wedding photography was exactly where I was meant to be.
Even now, I still think about my younger self eagerly filling up rolls of film and impatiently waiting for them to come back from the store after they were developed. She’s the reason I am where I am today. Every wedding, every family, and every milestone I have the privilege of photographing is proof that sometimes the dreams we have as children really do stay with us for a reason.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say the journey has been rough, but it has definitely come with its obstacles. The biggest challenge I face is time. While growing Laurissa Myers Photography, I also work a full-time job, so balancing both responsibilities can be difficult.
One thing I never compromise on is my clients’ experience. Galleries are delivered on time, communication remains a priority, and I make sure every session and wedding receives the attention it deserves. Because of that, the areas that often get pushed to the back burner are the behind-the-scenes tasks that people don’t always see: updating my website, planning marketing strategies, creating social media content, networking, and consistently advertising my business.
Ironically, one of my biggest obstacles has also been myself. Like many small business owners, I’ve had to overcome the fear of putting myself and my work out there. It’s easy to worry about how your work will be perceived or to hesitate before promoting yourself. Over time, I’ve realized that if I want people to trust me with their memories, I have to be willing to share what I create and the experience I provide confidently.
As my business continues to grow, finding more time for those behind-the-scenes tasks is one of my biggest goals. I know that investing in the business outside of photographing sessions is just as important as the work I do with a camera in my hands.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in wedding photography, but I also offer lifestyle sessions, including maternity, family, and couples photography. The majority of my work is weddings, whether I’m serving as the lead photographer or second shooting alongside another photographer.
One area I’m especially passionate about is maternity photography. There is something incredibly special about documenting the beginning of motherhood and preserving that beautiful season of life. Being able to capture those moments for families is something I truly love, and I hope to take on more maternity sessions in the future.
As my business continues to grow, I see myself niching down to primarily weddings and maternity photography. Those are the moments that resonate with me the most, and I love telling the stories that mark the beginning of a marriage and the beginning of a family. For now, I continue to photograph a variety of lifestyle sessions while building toward that vision!
I think what sets me apart is that I don’t see myself as someone who simply shows up to take pictures. I become part of my couples’ support system for the day. I’m constantly watching the timeline, communicating with vendors, and making sure we’re staying on track so my couples can be fully present and enjoy every moment. I want them to look back on their wedding day and remember how they felt, not how stressed they were about staying on schedule.
At the end of the day, I want my clients to feel like they hired someone who genuinely cared about them, not just about delivering a gallery. Building relationships, earning their trust, and preserving their memories in a way that feels authentic is what motivates me every time I pick up my camera.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
One thing I really love about my location is the variety of beautiful places available for sessions. There are so many unique locations nearby, and with neighboring cities just a short drive away, I have the flexibility to offer my clients a wide range of settings to match their vision. Honestly, I can’t think of anything I dislike about being located where I am. I feel fortunate to have access to so many beautiful locations that allow me to create a unique experience for each of my clients.
