Today we’d like to introduce you to Kahleea Washington
Hi Kahleea, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
“I’ve always been an avid tea drinker, which made me appreciate the incredible variety and flavors tea can offer. After being diagnosed with pre-diabetes, I was inspired to find healthier alternatives to sugary drinks. That’s when I started experimenting with brewing my own fresh fruit teas as a natural, flavorful substitute. I shared my creations with friends and family, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. This encouragement motivated me to start selling my teas during my senior year of college. Eventually, I realized that what started as a personal health journey could become a business. Working in the economic development field gave me access to business resources, and with support from local development organizations, I was able to turn my passion into a legitimate, thriving business.”
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
“Starting my business has definitely had its challenges. The toughest part was launching in a completely new city and state, where I had no established connections. I had to build both my business and my personal ties to the community from the ground up. As someone who’s naturally independent, asking for help didn’t come easily at first. But I quickly realized that building a successful business isn’t something you can do alone. I’m incredibly grateful for the support I received from local business development organizations and fellow entrepreneurs, including my parents, who helped guide me through the process. My community has truly embraced me and my business, I would not be where I am without them!”
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
“As a community development specialist in the economic development field, I manage local government entities, oversee small business grant opportunities, and guide development projects in the City of Lansing. My focus is on making sure these projects reflect the community’s needs and desires, and I’m passionate about integrating community-driven aspects into our work. What sets me apart is my deep commitment to placemaking projects—whether it’s public art displays, creating inviting public spaces, or organizing community events, I strive to create environments that bring people together. My background in urban sociology gives me a unique understanding of how these initiatives can truly transform communities, fostering a sense of belonging and pride. I’m especially proud of the projects I’ve led that have had a lasting impact on Lansing’s neighborhoods and public spaces.”
How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happiest is connecting with people and helping them succeed. Over the years, I’ve gained knowledge and experience that I love to share with others to help them thrive in whatever they’re pursuing. A few years ago, I realized that my true purpose is to guide others on their journey, using the lessons I’ve learned from my own experiences. There’s something incredibly rewarding about a simple conversation leading to someone finding the exact resource or advice they need. I feel truly blessed to have a spirit that naturally allows me to connect with others, no matter the situation.”
