Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Hurst
Hi Justin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been writing and recording music for more than a decade, existing within multiple small, home-recording projects and starting with Rebel Prom Queen. I picked up a guitar around the age of 16 (and then a keyboard, and a bass, and a drumset) and haven’t looked back since. In college I use to busk for tips quite a lot, but nowadays I’m more focused on production and recording my current projects; the psychedelic rap project The Existential Dread, and my folk project Justin H.K.
In the last few years I’ve also began doing some visual acrylic art, writing poetry and short stories, and doing some indie music critic with my blog/website Dirt Witch Records
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course not!
Music has never been a moneymaker for me trying to find time for it when life gets in the way is a constant struggle; especially in college, and now with my little kid.
The other main struggle has been finding an audience. There is so much amazing music out there nowadays, but it does make convincing others to listen to my music pretty hard! This is especially true since I’m not capable of playing a lot of my music live (I recorded all the parts, and don’t have a band).
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Specializing is my weakness! But I’m probably most known for folk music!
Music is definetely what I’ve been doing the longest, and I’ve tried all sorts of genres from indie pop and post-rock to hip-hop and alt-country.
As far as what sets me apart? I consider myself pretty fiercely DIY, so my creative vision is present throughout everything I do.I This leads me to further experimentation, while still delivering a cohesive musical experience.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was the shyest loud-mouth you ever did meet! I’ve always been into nerd-culture, books and left-wing politics.
