Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Dozois
Jordan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Jordan Dozois.
Im a licensed Cosmetologist, small business owner, designer, husband, and daddy to two dogs named Vegas and Berlin, along with two guinea pigs named Soliel and Lune.
I was born and raised in Canada, then moved to the USA in 2017. I first attended college for Fashion Design straight out of high school, and wanted to expand my education in the beauty industry by enrolling in Hair School immediately after. For as long as I can think back, expressing myself through art and design came natural to me. I was born with an eye for beauty which fuels my passion for my career in the beauty industry.
In 2016 I met my now husband of 7 years – Gregory, at an Electronic Music Festival called Electric Forest. Gregory is a born and raised Michigander, Rochester Adams and Oakland University Alumni. Living in different countries, I decided I would make the move. After a difficult and lengthy immigration process I was able to move to Michigan December 26 2017.
With over a decade of experience, prioritizing ethics, open communication, and realistic expectations, I quickly built a reputation of happy clients achieving their dream hair goals. I specialize in color/blonding services, as well as extensions. With my passion and work ethic, I hustled and grew my brand “Jordan Dozois Aesthetic” into my first business.
In 2024 I was ecstatic, and honored to be asked to become a business partner at Luminaries Salon, which lead to me overseeing and designing Luminaires retail space.
I have future plans to expand my brand to many different avenues of the beauty industry.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road was far from smooth.
When I moved to Michigan, I was informed my Cosmetology license did not transfer over from Canada to the USA. The licensing exam in Canada is a written exam, while the USA exam is a written and a practical. In order to transfer my license I had to complete the practical exam. Given I was never taught how to take this exam, I researched the test format and taught myself the exam content from YouTube videos over the course of a couple months and passed. That was the first bump in the road to getting my career going.
Immigrating from a different country, I had to restart and rebuild my brand from ground zero, which began with me working at Luminaires Salon November 15 2019. Not growing up in the area and not knowing many people, building clientele felt overwhelming and defeating. On top of not having a wide network, restarting my career only months prior to a global pandemic was an unexpected plot twist. After 2 years of mask mandates and capacity regulations building clientele began to feel impossible.
I promised myself to not throw in the towel because once the world opened back up and things started to feel normal again, that’s when I was able to really jump start my career and make things happen.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Im a Stylist. I specialize in color and blonding services, as well as hair extensions.
I definitely have a great reputation for my blonding work, and priority toward client experience.
The things that set me apart from others is my attention to detail and patience when with clients.
Making sure the client enjoys their entire experience at Luminaires from the second they walk in the door, to when they leave. All clients feel like a part of our collective.
Blonde hair requires a special level of care and precision, as well as advanced skill in chemistry and product knowledge.
I am most proud of the commitment I put into my career. The universe does reward positivity and hard work.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My best advice to anyone starting out.
Passion and dedication will drive your career. The beauty industry is a tough one. You have to really love what you do.
There is no room for an ego. I feel like in the world of social media our judgment can get clouded. You are lucky to have a client sitting in your chair, trusting you with the service they’re requesting. Not the other way around.
Continue to learn, no one knows everything. I think I learn something new everyday.
Not every client is going to be happy, and some may not be the right match for you personality wise. They may not be happy with your work, and that’s okay.
