Today we’d like to introduce you to Jodi Lynn Burton
Hi Jodi Lynn , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Oh goodness! I have had a bumpy road to get to where I am now. I never imagined I would end up as a professional illustrator. I attended photography school and worked as a professional photographer after college, primarily shooting weddings and graduation photos. However, I quickly realized that I didn’t enjoy it anymore— not so much the process, but dealing with people in high-stress situations. Dealing with drunk uncles asking me silly questions like, “That’s a big camera for such a little girl. Are you sure you know how to work that thing?” was particularly frustrating. *Eye roll.*
Whenever I finished photographing a wedding, I would come home and draw as a form of stress relief. At that time, I had four roommates who often asked what I planned to do with all my drawings. I thought no one would want to see my “stupid” drawings, so I shrugged it off. A friend eventually convinced me to participate in an art fair. To my surprise, I sold out everything at my first show and realized that my drawings weren’t as stupid as I had thought.
It has been 15 years since I first started doing art shows. Since then, I have worked on many exciting projects, met amazing people, traveled around the US, and embraced my love for creating. Last year, I signed a lease for my first art studio in downtown Berkley, Michigan. I operate my art studio in the back, and in the front, I have a small gift shop where you can buy my art and other wonderful treasures.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest struggle for me has been teaching myself business practices. They don’t teach you about business in art school, but to be an artist, you have to run a business. In the beginning, it was very overwhelming, but as time went on, I began to enjoy learning about business, the process, and how it works. Today, I love the challenge of figuring out and trying to solve new problems.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in custom house portraits, cityscapes, storybook-inspired scenes, and intricate floral illustrations. Each piece is hand-drawn, capturing the essence of everyday moments and transforming them into something magical and unique.
I’m best known for my quirky and imaginative doodles that blend humor, nostalgia, and a deep sense of connection. Whether it’s a portrait of a beloved home, a vibrant cityscape, or a whimsical floral design, my art resonates with people who appreciate personal and meaningful creations.
What I’m most proud of is my ability to bring people’s stories to life through my art. Knowing that a custom piece I’ve created becomes a cherished keepsake or a source of inspiration for someone is incredibly rewarding.
What sets me apart is my focus on authenticity and detail. Every drawing is infused with personality, capturing not just the visual elements but also the emotions and memories behind them. I’m passionate about making art accessible, approachable, and deeply personal, and I think that resonates with people looking for something truly unique.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My family has always supported my artistic journey, but the person who truly inspired me to pursue art was my Uncle Mark. He was a talented hairdresser, ceramicist, and passionate art enthusiast. I’ll never forget how, every year, he would take me to the Ann Arbor Art Fair and museum art exhibitions, constantly introducing me to new artists or sharing articles that expanded my horizons. Though my uncle has since passed, I carry his influence with me every day. I know he would be incredibly proud of the artist I’ve become.
