Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Carter.
Hi Jeremy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From a really young age, I had an affinity for the different or things off the beaten path. Through art, I have found a conduit to channel this interest in the unknown. I started painting more seriously in the peak of the pandemic; I was living in a studio apartment in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. I was a block from the lake, and being so close to nature in the city deeply inspired me. As winter started, I began painting in my bathroom & as the scale of my work increased so did the need to find larger spaces to create. I am native of Detroit, so I am beginning to bring my practice back to my hometown after starting to create a name for myself in Chicago. It is time to plant roots and give back to where I am from as I wander the world; you can’t forget where you began.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
A big hurdle I struggle with frequently is crippling loneliness; this is a pain that a lot of people deal with, of course. Something’s that has hurt me along the way is funding my art career; even though my practice is centered around found items constructing work can become very pricey to my detriment.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a mixed media artist my work is centered around up-sourced items found in everyday life. I am a painter, but I am most known for my sculptures of mixed materials, which these works are generally very brutal in nature. I am most excited about what is to come in creating for me; my work is very sporadic. For some artists, this is a hindrance; in my case, it is my fuel to keep going.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My imagination is most important to my success; in order to create new work, I need to find new places along with ways of thinking. It is very important to stray from mundanity.
