Today we’d like to introduce you to Grover McCants.
Hi Grover , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out in my family’s transportation business as a teenager delivering lost baggage from Metro Airport and priority packages as well as hauling luggage and equipment for practically every musical act that played Detroit in the 70s and 80s. I also became an event and party promotor in the late 70s when my friends Richard Brooks, Rico Jenkins and Garland Hardeman started The Real. We gave some spectacular events at many or Metro Detroit’s hottest nightspots of the era including the Combo Riverview Ballroom, My Fair Lady, The Rooster tail, LaNotte and Taboo. These parties were beyond legendary they were events never to be forgotten. After deregulation closed the delivery service down as it did many airlines in the mid 80s I went to work for the Detroit Pistons as a sales and marketing rep during the Bad Boys Championship era. When I left the Pistons I was the manager of the Sting Nightclub ( former Playboy Club) on James Couzens (Lodge @ Greenfield) I then went to work for Comcast after they purchased Barden Cable in the mid 90s. There I sold advertising and produced local programming as well as becoming an on air talent hosting sports and community based shows. In 1998 I founded Hollingsworth McCants Media Group. Here we specialize is advertising, marketing, PR, film and television production, crisis management and consulting. Married for 32 years to my beautiful wife Karen with 3 adult children and 2 grandchildren. My acting career actually started in kindergarten when I was the lead actor in a play. From there I participated in theater through out my school years into college at Clark Atlanta and Wayne State here in Detroit. I appeared as an extra (background) in major film projects in Detroit and Atlanta. When the film industry incentives were established in the early 2000s, I started going on auditions for television commercials and films. To date I have appeared in hundreds of commercial projects as both an actor and director producer locally and nationally. The one thing I am most proud of is going back to school in my late 50s to complete my bachelor’s degree in marketing and going on to earn
Masters in Psychology and Business Administration (MBA) to set an example for my children and others that it is never too late to learn. I also love is the fact that through out my career I have always been blessed to do what I love so much I would pay somebody to let me do. Nowhere near rich but wealthy in life experience and happiness that I would encourage everybody to strive for. Hard work and perseverance in following your passion is all you have to do. Go get it!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There are always obstacles and challenges along the road of life. How you react to them is what makes or breaks you. Deregulation in the early 80s forced us out the of the delivery business, at The Pistons the end of the Bad Boys in the early 90s was the end of my tenure with The Pistons organization. The Sting was sold ending my time as manager there and Comcast thought I was too popular outshining my superiors so they showed me the door after winning a National Cable Ace award for one of my programming projects. All of those setbacks and heartbreaks set me up to understand what my Father and both Grandfather’s taught me… Always work for yourself. My Mother’s father was a Surgeon, My father’s father was barber they both never worked for anyone their adult live. Took those lessons from them and haven’t looked back. Obstacles and Challenges are opportunities.
