Today we’d like to introduce you to Faith Nesbitt.
Hi Faith, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I always knew I wanted to be an Artist when I grew up; how to make that happen? I wasn’t sure, but I knew I could never stop creating till that day came. I was a 5th year in college at Central Michigan University with a 40 hr. a week social work internship at a local women’s shelter and a minimum amount of 12 credits to keep my scholarships/ financial aid, so I decided to enroll in ceramics. This was the best decision that I could’ve made for myself. Soon after I started, I was spending upwards of 30 hr. a week in the studio; this worked as my therapy outside of my social work internship. I found community, comfort, hope, lessons to be learned, and home within the walls of the art studio at CMU, something I could not be more thankful to have found that year. Pottery found me, and it saved me. I applied for the student exhibition that spring and won the People’s Choice for the piece I had submitted; this was the first time I felt like a real artist. My 5th year was cut short in March of 2020 by COVID-19. As a graduation present to myself in such a hopeless time, I took a leap and bought myself a Brent wheel and moved to South Bend, Indiana; I had so much hope in investing in my career as an artist. My wheel has been spinning ever since. South Bend was a mecca for pottery wizards, and the community was so nurturing and essential to my growth as a potter. In December of 2021, I moved back to Bay City, the town in which I grew up in, and began hosting pop-up markets and workshops in the downtown area. I create both funky and functional works thrown on the wheel and hand built all from my at-home studio here in Bay City that can be found all over the state of Michigan and the US in both coffee shops and homes that are close to my heart.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being your own boss is never an easy task, and there is always so much more to learn. But there’s never been a day that I wanted to give up on pottery; it has taught me to move slower and appreciate all of the steps and challenge.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I do pottery! I create both funky and functional works on the wheel and hand-built in my home studio! I specialize in all things funky! I am most proud of the power that pottery has to bring people together!
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking.
What’s life without a lil risk? A lil razzle dazzle to spice up your life? I am absolutely a risk taker. Graduating during the pandemic and buying myself a Brent wheel was a huge risk that thankfully didn’t come to bite me in the ass, or at least it hasn’t quite yet! Working for yourself is always a huge risk!
