Today we’d like to introduce you to Faith Forcier
Hi Faith, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My first love is art, that’s where it all started. I started doing my makeup in high school as an additional creative outlet. Quickly realized that I wanted to pursue makeup artistry long term just didn’t know how to get started. I knew I had to put my foot in the door and make it happen myself. In 2016 I graduated high school and continued to work my retail job while slowly building a makeup kit. One of my coworkers asked me to do her makeup, she was a bridesmaid in a wedding. I said yes as long as the bride was ok with me coming! I had no portfolio and the smallest makeup kit ever! I arrive at the venue and do my coworkers makeup, as I am finishing the artist that is supposed to be doing the brides makeup gets a call about a family emergency, understandably so she had to leave immediately. The bride was super stressed out as she now had no one to get her ready for her ceremony that was starting in 2 hours. I walked up to her and offered my services even though I had no portfolio to show her. She put full trust in me to make it happen. Once she saw the finished product she was so excited, and I was too! She loved the makeup and was able to walk down the aisle feeling beautiful and no one would ever know the craziness that had occurred a couple hours before. I was so proud of myself and also proved to myself I could do this. She graciously gave me many photos from the wedding that showcased the makeup and with those I was able to advertise myself and built a business, which is now flourishing today! It took years of practice, trial and error as I am fully self taught in makeup and business. And now, almost all of my bookings come from referrals and recommendations.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I had no mentor in makeup and built this business by myself. Most people didn’t even believe that makeup artistry was a long term, sustainable job. And for the first years it definitely wasn’t. I worked a full time job and would fit makeup in any free moment I had. I felt like I had no free time. But I felt my best when I was doing makeup, it makes me so happy. I had to make all the mistakes to learn the right way. Not charging enough, choosing between booking a wedding and having a weekend off to be with significant other and family. To be honest I am still trying to find a balance between work and family. I have to schedule vacations over a year in advance and it’s stressful on other people, I have to say no to a lot of family events because I’m doing makeup. When I was pregnant with my daughter, the first trimester was filled with morning sickness and it was ROUGH. I thought it would never end and I wasn’t preforming my best for my clients. Chasing this dream has come with many sacrifices in my personal life, but the freedom of being a stay at home at the same time of running my business is a huge blessing.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a professional ‘boujee’ makeup artist as I have been labeled before. And I’m totally here for it! I specialize in bridal glam, colorful and creative makeup. I am most known for my bridal glam with an editorial flare to give unique and sexy looks. What sets me apart is my versatility and adaptability. I can and want to do everything. A lot of people tell me to ‘niche’ down and pick one thing but I love it all and I don’t want to be told no!
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I’ve always considered myself adaptable, but Covid brought it to a whole new level. Just trying to find ways to somehow still do makeup and have lower expectations of what my business had to be for that amount of time to keep everyone safe. I know it put everyone on pause but I thankfully was able to reschedule almost all my brides and clients.
