Daily Inspiration: Meet Emily Frushour

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Frushour.

Hi Emily, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always been passionate about art – from childhood days of Care Bear coloring books at the kitchen table, all the way into adulthood with a degree in graphic design and my own business as an independent artist. Throughout my years as a graphic designer, stay-at-home mom, and children’s art teacher, I found myself continually searching for new creative outlets.

In 2016, I started experimenting with watercolor and sharing my work on social media. That led to my first sale and the pursuit of turning a new passion into a new career. I opened an Etsy shop and began selling my work at art fairs and seasonal pop-up markets. I started connecting with local artists and small business owners, gaining insight and inspiration in every conversation. All the while, I was continuing to create, experiment, and establish my own style. In 2018, I began selling my work in retail stores, and two years later, my business had outgrown my home office, and I moved into my own art studio.

I feel so lucky to own a small business that cultivates joy and promotes creativity in myself and others!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While establishing my own artistic style came naturally, navigating the business end of things was a new challenge. I’ve been fortunate to connect with hundreds of artists and small business owners throughout my journey to become a working artist, and their insight and advice has helped me tremendously.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a mid-Michigan artist specializing in vibrant and delicate watercolors. My work embodies the spirit of beloved landmarks, homes, lakes, states, and more, and I love integrating the organic nature of watercolor into my crisp designs.

All of my watercolors and prints are created by me in my cozy studio in downtown DeWitt, Michigan. Every piece is painted with a tiny paintbrush and converted to a digital file, then printed on a fine art printer using archival paper and HD inks. I’m a one-woman show, so your orders are received, created, packaged, and shipped by yours truly. I pride myself on producing high-quality handmade goods that bring joy to each and every customer.

My work can be found in several retail shops throughout Michigan, as well as occasional art fairs and seasonal pop-up markets. I have been featured on the cover of the Lansing City Pulse, and I am a proud member of the Arts Council of Greater Lansing.

What are your plans for the future?
I want to stay true to myself and my creative process as I continue to grow my business. I am always on the lookout for new brick-and-mortar shops to carry my work, and I look forward to many more custom projects that will promote creativity and an appreciation for the arts!
